Horizon League Releases Tennis Preseason Polls

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (1/11/13) -- The Horizon League preseason tennis polls have been released and they reveal that the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team is projected to finish third and the University of Detroit Mercy men's team is pegged to finish fifth.
 
The Horizon League coaches were the voters in the poll with coaches not allowed to vote for their own teams.
 
Detroit's women's team earned 36 points, including one first place vote, only two points behind Cleveland State for second place. The 16-time defending champion, UIC, was unanimously picked to finish first, receiving 49 points with seven first place tallies. Milwaukee was picked to finish fourth (31 points), while Youngstown State was tabbed fifth (27).  Wright State (22), Green Bay (14) and Valparaiso round out the eight-team league.
 
On the men's side Green Bay earned 36 points with six first place nods while Cleveland State was tabbed second with 30 points and one first place vote. Wright State was picked to finish third (27) and Youngstown State to finish fourth (19), three points ahead of the Titans (16). UIC (13) and Valparaiso (6) round out the seven-team league.
 
The Detroit men's team will open their spring schedule with a match against Western Michigan on Friday, January 11 and the women will get underway on Friday, Jan. 18 at Xavier.
