DETROIT (1/25/13) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team will be in action on Sunday in East Lansing to face undefeated Michigan State at 7:00 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility
MSU (3-0) blanked both Dayton and Oakland on the same day (1/19) and edged Eastern Michigan (1/22) to earn their third victory. The Spartans did not drop a single set against either Dayton or Oakland cruising to the victories while MSU had to battle Eastern Michigan for the extra point in a 4-3 win. EMU swept the doubles matches and took second and third singles, but Michigan State took four singles points to defeat the Eagles.
In singles action, junior Marina Bohrer hasn't dropped a set, winning all three matches in straight sets and freshman Emily Meyers has only lost five games in three matches. Meyers blanked her opponent against Dayton, 6-0, 6-0, while winning, 6-2, 6-1, over Oakland and earning a, 6-1, 6-1, victory over EMU.
UDM is coming off a 5-2 loss to Xavier on Sunday in Cincinnati.
Elena Strakhova was the lone winner at sixth singles, taking her match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Also in that match, the Titans swept doubles play with Strakhova and newcomer
Irina Slizovskaya winning at the first position, 8-4, while the duo of
Nino Sujashvili and
Chloe Karoub won second doubles in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (8-6), and the pair of Valeryia Kulikouskaya and
Julia Fernandes won, 8-6, in the third spot.
Including the fall season, Sujashvili leads the team with 11 singles victories while Kulikouskaya has recorded 10 overall.
Detroit will continue the dual-match season when it travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. to face Eastern Michigan (2/1) before opening the home schedule against Oakland the following day (2/2).
