DETROIT (1/3/12) -- The Detroit women's basketball team ended the non-conference season at 7-5, the most wins in non-league play since the 2000-01 season. UDM was undefeated at home at 4-0 and brings a 10-game home winning streak into conference play, which is currently tied for the 15th longest in the nation. UDM has played some tough teams in the non-conference, including nationally-ranked Penn State, South Florida from the BIG EAST and Michigan out of the Big Ten.
UDM is currently leading the Horizon League in scoring (73.4), field-goal percentage (46.6%), field-goal percentage defense (35.7%), rebounding (42.6) and rebounding margin (+ 9.3), while ranking second in scoring margin (+ 13.0) and assists (15.0).
Sophomore
Shareta Brown leads the conference – and the nation – in scoring at 26.0 ppg., and tops the HL in field-goal percentage (62.5%). Senior
Yar Shayok is third in rebounding (10.4) and field-goal percentage (50.7%), while freshman
Rosanna Reynolds is seventh in the HL in assists (3.8).

Cleveland State (at Cleveland State 1/12, at Calihan Hall 1/31)
The Vikings were picked No. 5 in the preseason poll, but had a stretch of seven wins in a row and are 8-5 on the season. CSU has wins over Indiana on the road and at home against Mississippi. Senior Shalonda Winton was a preseason First Team All-HL selection before the season began and has not disappointed averaging 21.7 points and 10.8 rebounds – both second in the HL - and 4.8 assists per game, tied for first in the league. CSU is averaging 66.8 points, while allowing 62.9 and is second in the HL in field-goal percentage (42.2%).

Green Bay (at Green Bay 1/8, at Calihan Hall 2/28)
Green Bay was the preseason favorite to win the Horizon League and is off to a 9-2 start, which includes wins over Missouri and Wisconsin. The Phoenix is averaging 64.2 points per game, which is seventh in the league, but is allowing a conference-low 49.1. Green Bay has three players in double figures in scoring, led by senior Adrian Ritchie's 15.5 ppg. Senior Sarah Eichler is tallying 12.8 ppg., while senior Stephanie Sension is at 11.4 ppg. Ritchie also leads the famous “buzz defense” with 3.0 steals per game. Green Bay does have a new coach on the sidelines, sort of, as Kevin Borseth is back at Green Bay after spending the last five years at Michigan.

Loyola (at Calihan Hall 1/24, at Loyola 2/21)
The Jesuit-rival from Chicago was picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll and is 4-8 after starting the season 3-1. The Ramblers are averaging 65.1 points and have four players in doubles figures, led by Simone Law's 13.2 ppg. Monica Albano is tallying 12.7 points and has knocked down a Horizon-League best 32 triples, while Taylor Johnson and Patrice King are recording 11.6 and 10.2 points, respectively. LU takes care of the ball standing second in the conference with a +5.1 turnover margin and is tied for second with 9.8 steals per game.

Milwaukee (at Milwaukee 2/2, at Calihan Hall 3/2)
The Panthers have dropped four in a row to fall to 4-8. Milwaukee has a new coach and is among the conference's best offensive teams ranking second in the league with 69.2 points per game, a lot of which comes from the outside as UWM is tied for the league lead with 103 treys. The Panthers notched 116 points earlier in the year with a 116-112 double overtime win against Bradley. Angela Rodriguez leads the team and is fifth in the HL in scoring at 15.6 ppg., while preseason All-League selection Sami Tucker is tallying 12.1 points and 6.3 rebounds. Defensively, the Panthers are last in the HL giving up 77.2 points.

UIC (at Calihan Hall 1/26, at UIC 2/23)
The Flames started the season at 1-6, but have won three of the last five to sit at 4-8. The Flames lost over 65% of their offense from last season due to graduation, but Louisville transfer Rachel Story is helping offset that with a team-best 14.7 ppg., seventh in the conference. Katie Hannemann is second on the squad at 12.3 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds. UIC's 60.1 points is eighth in the HL, while its' 36.3% shooting is ninth. The Flames do rank first in block shots (4.2) and in offensive rebounds (15.3).

Valparaiso (at Calihan Hall 2/9, at Valparaiso 3/9)
Valparaiso won its first two games and is 4-8 on the season. The Crusaders – under first-year head coach Tracey Dorow - started the season with a 64-52 victory over Indiana and are 3-1 at home, but 1-7 on the road. Tabitha Gerardot – who was a preseason All-HL pick – tops the team in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (7.5), while Charae Richardson is averaging 7.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and a team-high 3.6 assists per game. Valpo is ninth in the league in scoring at 57.7 points.
All-Time Series: Detroit leads 8-5.
Wright State (at Wright State 1/16, at Calihan Hall 2/13)
Wright State was tabbed third in the Horizon League preseason poll after back-to-back 20-win seasons and is 6-6 on the year. The Raiders are led by the preseason Horizon League Player of the Year in sophomore Kim Demmings, who is third in the conference with 20.7 ppg., and fifth handing out 3.8 apg. KC Elkins is averaging 10.1 ppg., while Tayler Stanton is sixth in the league in rebounding at 9.1 rpg., but she has missed the last three contests with an injury. WSU is fourth in the HL in scoring at 67.0 ppg., while allowing 72.8, eighth in the conference.

Youngstown State (at Youngstown State 2/7, at Calihan Hall 3/7)
The Penguins are off to fast start at 9-3 and that was after being selected eighth in the Horizon League preseason poll. Youngstown State is third in the conference in offense tallying 67.3 points and matching that effort on defense allowing just 58.5, second in the HL. Three YSU players are in double digits in scoring, led by senior Brandi Brown's 19.8 points and league-best 11.3 rebounds. Sophomore Heidi Schlegel is second on the team averaging 10.9 ppg., while freshman Shar'Rae Davis is tallying 10.6 points and 4.8 assists, tied for first in the conference.
