DETROIT (10/7/2013) -- Yar Shayok already left her name among the top players in the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball history and she recently added to her resume with the signing of a professional contact in France.
"I am grateful for the chance to continue playing basketball overseas," said Shayok. "It's really a blessing to live out my dream."
Shayok signed with Leon Tregor Basket 29 of the French League's Second Division, one of the most competitive women's basketball league's in Europe.
During her time at Detroit, she helped revitalize the Titan program from the cellar of the Horizon League to the top of the standings, which included a second-place finish and a trip to the 2012 Horizon League Championship as well as two-straight postseason appearances and winning the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) last season.
"This opportunity would have not been possible had I not played Division I basketball," said Shayok. "I am truly grateful that I was given the opportunity to play for Detroit, which definitely prepared me for playing at the professional level."
A 2013 UDM graduate with a degree in Political Science, Shayok finished her career as just the second Titan in school history to record over 1,000 career points and rebounds as well as playing in a school record 132 games. She left Detroit second in school history - and fourth all-time in the Horizon League - in career rebounds (1,152) and was fifth in blocks (118) and 13th in points (1,230).
She averaged 9.3 points and 8.7 rebounds as a Titan with 64 double-digit scoring games, 52 double-digit rebounding efforts and 33 career double doubles.
She also received numerous accolades in her five years – she redshirted as a freshman in 2008-09 – including the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year (2010), All-HL Second Team (2010), All-Defensive Team (2011, 2013) and the HL Sixth Player of the Year (2012, 2013).
Shayok follows former teammates
