HEBRON, Ky., (10/8/2013) -- Senior
Brendan Leonard ended the fall with his third top-20 finish as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team closed its fall season with the conclusion of the Bearcat Invitational on Tuesday, hosted by Cincinnati and played at the Par 72, 6,728-yard Traditions Golf Club.
A weather delay yesterday forced the second round to be completed today before the third round began as the Titans finished the event in 11th with a 903, tallying a 301 in all three rounds. UDM was just two strokes out of a top-10 finish.
"We did some good things out there, but we just didn't have it," said head coach Mark Engel. "We played some holes well at times, but we were inconsistent too and we will improve on that."
Leonard led Detroit by tying for 18th with a 221 (73-73-75), finishing the second round with a 1-over 73 before carding a 3-over 75 on the final 18. He concluded the fall season leading the team with a 72.4 average, including three top-20 efforts and a pair of top-10 marks.
Freshman
Kyle Gaines shared 33rd with a 224 (76-72-76), posting the best round on the squad with an even-par 72 in round two.
Sophomore
Wil Wittmann totaled a 225 (76-73-73) to tie for 36th, saving his best round for last with a 1-over 73 in round three. Sophomore
Aaron Knutson shared 70th with a 235 (76-80-79), while classmate
Josh Shaw was 75th with a 240 (80-83-77).
"We had some good scores out there, but we just couldn't get them all together," said Coach Engel. "This is the fall season and hopefully the weather stays warm and we can get in some more practice as we get ready for the spring."
Detroit will continue its hard work the rest of the fall and winter as it gets ready for the spring championship season.
