Howard, Bruinsma Named Men's Basketball Team Captains

DETROIT (11/5/13) - The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball head coach Ray McCallum has announced that senior forward Evan Bruinsma along with junior forward Juwan Howard, Jr. have been selected as team captains for the 2013-14 season.

"Evan and Juwan are two veteran players that understand the program and we can rely on both on and off the court to help lead this team," stated coach McCallum.

Bruinsma has played in 96 games over his first three years entering his senior campaign and is the only four-year veteran on the team. Last year, Bruinsma played in 32 of 33 games - starting the final six – and averaged 5.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Bruinsma scored a season-high 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting with five rebounds at Youngstown State and recorded a double-double (off the bench) with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Valparaiso. Bruinsma received the Dave DeBusschere Most Improved Award and the William Ebben Academic and Athletic Excellence accolade at the end of the year banquet. He was also a member of the UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll and both the Horizon League's Fall & Spring Academic Honor Roll.

"Evan is a four year player who has been part of a championship team and knows the system. He has just been a great representative of what we're all about on and off the court, so we're happy to have him as one of our leaders," said coach McCallum.

Howard is the lone returning starter from last year's team, where he played in 32 of 33 games - starting the first 27 and averaged 7.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Howard scored in double figures 13 times and was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Week following back-to-back double digit scoring affairs. Howard scored a season-high 18 points with three assists and three rebounds at Syracuse and earned the Norm Swanson Top Newcomer Award at the end of the year banquet.

"Juwan is one of our veteran players who has worked really hard and dedicated himself to make a big commitment to the team. He is a guy that we are going to rely on and off the floor as a vocal leader. He is really hungry and determined to keep the Titans at the top of the Horizon League," said coach McCallum.

Detroit will tip-off its 107th season of basketball on Friday (Nov. 8) when it travels to Mobile, Ala. to face South Alabama. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Center and will be live on 1270 AM with the new voice of the Titans Dan Leach.
