Women's Basketball Notebook: Dec. 11, 2013

Every week, the Titan notebook will give a little more insight into the odds and ends stats, storylines and notes that might have been overlooked during the previous week's action.

Home Cooking – After playing seven of their first 10 games on the road – including games in Florida, New York and Ohio – the Titans will enjoy the next month for the most part in the Motor city with six of their next seven at home. The only trip on the docket is a quick bus ride to Wright State on Jan. 5.

Expect A Good One – Detroit hosts Eastern Michigan on Sunday and fans that come out have a great chance of getting their moneys worth. UDM leads the all-time series 14-8, but 12 of the 22 games have been decided by single digits, including four by a single point. Detroit has also won four of the last five, but two of those wins were in overtime (70-68, 2011) and double overtime (76-75, 2008).

Three Titans Score 20 – UDM had three players score 20 or more against Chicago State in Ellisha Crosby (24), Megan Hatter (21) and Senee Shearer (20). That was the first time that has happened since Dec. 21, 1998 vs. East Tennessee State when Stephanie Gray (23), Tia Winters (22) and Michelle James (21) accomplished it.

What are interesting are the parallels in the games. First, between Crosby, Hatter and Shearer, only six of their combined 65 points came from the free throw line. Back in 1998 out of the 66 combined points, only two came from the charity stripe meaning the Titans did their job when it came to shooting the ball.

Second, Shearer ended the game with a career-high nine assists as she was the lowest 20-point scorer of the trio. Back in 1998, James was the lowest scoring Titan and she too had nine helpers. Go figure.

On A Hot Streak – Senior Senee Shearer just got to 20 points with 20 against Chicago State her last time out, extending her 20-point scoring streak to five-straight games. The offensive output is the longest since Titan Hall-of-Famer and all-time leading scorer Cassandra Pack netted 20 or more in seven-straight games in the 1983-84 campaign.

During this streak, Shearer is averaging 23.0 ppg., notching 28 against Ball State, 21 vs. Rhode Island, 22 vs. Georgia Southern, 24 at Toledo and the before mentioned 20 against the Cougars.  On the season, she is fourth in the Horizon League with 19.8 ppg., trailing only Wright State's Kim Demmings (22.2), Youngstown State's Heidi Schlegel (20.5) and Angela Rodriguez of Milwaukee (20.0).

Among The Leaders – If you look among the leaders in the country, you might see a familiar name in Senee Shearer. The senior currently leads the Horizon League and is ninth in the nation with 3.40 three-point field goals per game.

She has 168 career 3-pointers, sixth in Titan history, and is primed to move into fifth place as she is just four behind Shari Hill's (1997-01) 172.

What A Difference 5 Games Make - Senior Megan Hatter has really turned it on in the last five games. During that time, Hatter is averaging 14.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, shooting 44.9% from the field compared to the first five games of the year where she tallied 6.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and was shooting 22.0%.

Catch The Titans On The Tube – Detroit's games against Eastern Michigan and IPFW will both be on Comcast 900 as well as on HLN Detroit.

Battling For Rebounds – After getting outrebounded in five of their first seven games, the Titans won the battle of the boards in both games last weekend, including a season-best +11 margin over Chicago State. UDM started turning it around by pulling down an even 35 against Georgia Southern.
