DETROIT (12/3/13) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will visit Toledo on Wednesday, Dec. 4 for the second match-up between the Titans and Rockets this season. LAST OUTING
The Titans used an early second half run to grab their second-straight road win of the season, 65-60, over South Florida Saturday night at the Sun Dome. USF led 31-23 at the half, before Detroit used a 17-5 run to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Detroit only shot 32.8 percent (19-of-58) overall, including 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from downtown, but made 25-of-28 from the charity stripe, while USF only made 15-of-23, including 11-of-19 in the second half. The Bulls shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) overall, just 16.7 percent (3-of-18) from beyond the arc. Detroit turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, but only three times in the second stanza, while also winning the battle on the boards 44-35, including 17-11 on the offensive glass.
ABOUT THE ROCKETS
The Rockets (6-0) will put a six-game winning streak on the line Wednesday when they host the Titans. The six straight victories to open the 2013-14 campaign are the most for Toledo since the 1998-99 season when it won its first 10 contests.
All five of Toledo's starters are averaging in double figures in the scoring column, led by Julius Brown at 16.5 ppg. He is followed by senior guard Rian Pearson (15.7 ppg), junior guard Justin Drummond (15.2 ppg), sophomore center Nathan Boothe (11.5 ppg) and junior forward J.D. Weatherspoon (11.0 ppg).
SERIES WITH TOLEDO
This will 53rd meeting between Detroit and Toledo, with the Rockets leading the all-time series 28-24. The Rockets took the first meeting this season 80-78 as part of the 2K Sports Classic benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. Toledo trailed by as many as 19 points, 58-39, with just over 15 minutes to play and were down 75-66 with 3:28 remaining, before Julius Brown capped off the Rockets' comeback with a tip-in to even the score at 77-77 with 47.3 seconds remaining. After Detroit hit one of two free throws on the ensuing possession, Brown converted a three-point play with 4.7 seconds left to give Toledo the win.
BRUINSMA NOMINATED FOR 2014 NABC GOOD WORKS TEAM
Detroit senior forward
Evan Bruinsma has been nominated for the 2014 Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team. The Titan co-captain has demonstrated great leadership, dedication and character both on the basketball court as well as in the classroom and around the community. Bruinsma is one of 75 Division I male student-athletes to be nominated, while just one of four from the Horizon League.
The 2014 nominees uphold impressive service resumes detailing unique and inspiring stories of servitude. From volunteering with sick and underprivileged children to lobbying state legislature for new laws that could help save lives, this exceptional group of young men and women demonstrate the positive impact student-athletes can have on and off the court. The 20 recipients will be announced in late February and recognized at the 2014 NABC National Convention.
TITAN CHARITY
Entering Wednesday's game the Titans lead the Horizon League and rank fifth in the nation in free throw shooting percentage. Detroit is shooting 79.4 percent (170-of-214) from the charity stripe including a whopping 86.3 percent (101-of-117) over the last four games.
BLOCK PARTY
The Titans have recorded 45 blocked shots through their first eight games and are averaging 5.6 blocked shots per game which ranks 40th in the nation. Detroit recorded a season-high 13 blocks against U-M Dearborn, which were the most for the Titans since swatting 17 against Western Michigan in 1978.
Senior center
Ugochukwu Njoku leads Detroit with 16 blocked shots and has recorded at least two blocks in four games this year, including a career-high five against U-M Dearborn.
