Women’s Basketball Notebook: Dec. 3, 2013

Every week, the Titan notebook will give a little more insight into the odds and ends stats, storylines and notes that might have been overlooked during the previous week's action. With a month passed in the season already, here is the first page of this year's notebook section.

8 Games Already - Detroit played eight games in the month of November, the most in that month in school history. This is the 37th year of Titan women's basketball and in four of those campaigns, Detroit didn't even start until December.

Small World - It was pretty interesting that down in Boca Raton, Fla., at Florida Atlantic's Thanksgiving Classic, the public address announcer 's – Mark Morgan – dad went to Detroit and he remembers going to Calihan Hall when he was younger. Just goes to show you are never far away from a Titan alum connection.

Shearer Keeps Hitting - Speaking of connections, how about senior Senee Shearer connecting on eight 3-pointers over the weekend to give her 161 in her career, moving her into sixth place in school history. Another note on Shearer is that she has attempted 702 shots in her career and 473 of them have been 3's. That means 67.3% of her career shots have been from behind the arc.

Getting A Chance - How about the weekend freshman Megan Galloway had in averaging 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game to win the Horizon League Freshman of the Week. Against Georgia Southern, she had 16 points and seven rebounds alone and this was a rookie who didn't see any action in the season opener at Canisius and played just four minutes against Lawrence Tech the following game.

Well Rounded - Junior Ellisha Crosby already had to wait two years to get back on the court, but now she is making up for lost time in a big way by playing a few different roles for the Titans. With the injury bug hitting UDM's point guards, she has been asked to play more of a lead guard and she tops the team with 18 total assists. Consider this though, despite the fact that almost half of her shots have been from the outside, she has used her size to battles for the boards leading the team with 7.5 rebounds per game and she also has four double-doubles.

Passing Sis - Senior Megan Hatter moved past her sister in another category in Titan history as she now has 397 career points, two more than her sister Heather had at UDM from 2006-09.  Megan also has more rebounds (306-247), assists (58-40), and steals (34-30), while the elder Heather still has more blocks (32-18).

A Tournament Win - In what was an unusual streak, UDM broke an 11-game slide at in-season tournaments with a win over Georgia Southern at the FAU Thanksgiving Classic. Prior to that, the last win the team had during a tournament in the season was 54-50 over New Hampshire at Virginia Tech's Lady Luck Classic in December of 2006. During that same time, Detroit has 11 wins combined between the Horizon League Tournament and postseason play.

Weird Coincidence - Just think where Detroit, Rhode Island and Florida Atlantic are located and you will notice they are not exactly regional rivals. Imagine the odds that in some way, shape or form, both the Detroit men and women would all face those programs during the regular season, let alone in a given three-week period as the men played FAU on Nov. 22 and will host Rhode Island Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2pm.
