DETROIT (2/21/13) –
The University of Detroit Mercy softball team is traveling to Southaven, Miss. to participate in the Blues City Classic hosted by the University of Memphis from Friday through Sunday at Greenbrook Park.
 
Detroit will face Wichita State (4:30 p.m. ET) and Southeast Missouri (7:00 p.m. ET) on Friday, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (2:00 p.m. ET) and host school Memphis (5:00 p.m. ET) on Saturday and will wrap-up the weekend with a single game against the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. ET

Youth Leading the Way
Sophomore Sam Henderson and freshman Katy Severson are leading the Titans in the batter's box with a combined six hits, 12 total bases and four runs scored. Severson leads the team, batting .286 with four hits while Henderson has a team-high two home runs and two RBI.
 
Henderson hit both her homers in one day, hitting one against Nebraska-Omaha and the other in a win against UNC-Wilmington on Feb. 9. Henderson was named CollegeSportsMadness.com's Horizon League Player of the week after her performance at the UNCW Beach Blast.
 
In the Circle
Junior, Karyn McCarty is 1-0 in four appearances with one start, eight innings pitched and an ERA of 4.38. Sophomore Kat Hoffman has allowed one earned run in 4.1 innings of work in three appearances for a 1.62 ERA. Hoffman has an opponent's batting average of .294 with two strikeouts.
 
The Shockers
Wichita State is 3-6 and is on a two-game winning streak after sweeping Appalachian State on Feb. 16-17 at the LaQuinta Inn and Sweets Tournament hosted by Florida Golf Coast University. While in Florida, the Shockers gave top-ranked Alabama a run for their money, but fell short as they lost the game, 2-0.
 
WSU is led by experience at the plate. Junior Ali Vendever and senior Haley Temple are tied for the team lead with nine hits apiece. Vendever is batting .333 with three doubles and three RBI while Temple has a .310 average with three doubles and a team-leading six RBI.
 
The leading pitcher for the Shockers is junior Sloan Anderson with a record of 2-2 in five appearances. Anderson has an ERA of 1.91 in 25.2 innings pitched allowing only seven earned runs.
 
The Redhawks
Southeast Missouri enters the classic with a 2-3 record after going 2-2 at the Mardi Gras Classic hosted by Louisiana-Monroe. The Redhawks won their first two games against Mississippi Valley State, 3-2, and Grambling State, 6-3, before dropping their next two to Louisiana Monroe, 5-1, and Northwestern, 8-0 (6 inn.).
 
Kaitlin Zink leads the team with a .353 batting average with four stolen bases while Lindsey Patterson has a pair of doubles and three RBI. On the rubber, Taylor Cowan is 1-2 and has a 1.65 ERA in 17.0 innings pitched with nine strikeouts.
 
As a team, SEMO is batting .204 and has a combined ERA of 3.35.
 
The Cougars
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (4-3) is one of only four teams, the only team UDM will face, that enter the Blues City Classic with a winning record. The Cougars are riding a two-game winning streak after defeating Liberty, 4-3, and Mercer, 8-7, on Sunday
 
Sophomore Brittany Toney leads the team with a .467 batting average with two doubles and five RBI. She went 6-7 in the last two games with a pair of RBI. Freshman CC Huthinson leads the team with three homers and nine RBI.
 
In the circle Haley Chambers leads the team with two wins, 28 strikeouts and an opponents' batting average of .239 in 23.1 innings of work.
 
The Tigers
Memphis is 2-8 after a 1-4 showing at the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge last weekend, the lone win coming in a 3-2 game against Nicholls. The Tigers were leading #10/11 LSU, 4-3, going into the bottom of the seventh inning but LSU scored on an RBI single and a passed ball to take the game, 5-4.
 
Senior Morgan Mosby leads the team with a .310 batting average with three runs scored and three batted in. Fellow senior Laura Curtis is batting .233 from the box and leads the team with four doubles.
 
Erin Roberts has an ERA of 3.35 in the circle in 39.2 innings of work with 25 strikeouts but is winless with five losses.
 
The Roos
University of Missouri Kansas City started the season, 3-1, but lost the next five contests at the Troy Cox Classic in New Mexico to get to their current record of 3-6.
 
Freshman Katie Kelly leads the team with a .478 batting average with two home runs and a .538 on base percentage. Sophomore Marlee Maples is batting .333 and leads the team with 13 RBI while hitting five doubles and one homer on the season.
 
The Kangaroos have struggled from the rubber, with a team ERA of 11.40 in nine games. Diana Friese has two wins but has a team-low ERA of 9.87 in 31 innings of work.
 
On the Horizon
UDM will return to the South when it travels to Kissimmee, Fla. for eight games at the Rebel Spring Games from Saturday, March 2 to Saturday, March 9.
