DETROIT (2/22/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy indoor men's track and field team will compete in the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend hosted by Youngstown State at the Watson and Tressel Training Site starting on Saturday. Live scoring and video of the meet will be available on both days while a live stream on the Horizon League Network on Saturday starts at 2:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

“You can't play defense and we're going to do the best we can,” said Guy Murray Director of Track and Field and Cross Country at the University of Detroit Mercy. “If we run, jump, and throw our personal bests, we will be happy but we want to score some significant points from that.”

Last year on the men's side, Detroit had six seventh place finishes (one position away from scoring) and three ninth place finishes that just missed the finals.

It will not get any easier this year as the Titans will be up against some tough competition.

Junior Charles Anthony had a career best of 6.92 in the 60 meter dash this season and there nine individuals in the league who have broken 7.00 with six of those between 6.90 and 6.93.

Milwaukee, known for its hurdling, is running very well in its events and will be tough but Steven Ivanics and Vince Lefler are among the Titans who will be looked upon in those events to break into the top six.

The middle distance events have featured a number of breakthroughs this season with quality times from Chris Smalley, Ryan Hofsess, and Joe Raffin to name a few who have who have secured quality times in those events.

“This league is real strong in distance and middle distance and there is potential to run fast and not get any points so we have to push as best we can,” added Murray.

In the jumps, senior Ja'Quan Patterson holds the team's high marks in both the long jump and the triple jump this season. In the weight throw, Eric Lewis will look to defend his Horizon League title after setting a new school record last year but he will have to battle it out with Paul Yovanic from Loyola who has scored better than Lewis so far this indoor season.

The heptathlon is an event that features a couple of front runners in Dan Simon from Milwaukee and Taylor Hennrick from Detroit who be in tight competition and beyond that allows for other individuals to be added to the mix.

Live scoring and video of the both days will be available. Coverage on the Horizon League Network on Saturday starts at 2:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
