LAST TIME OUT
Detroit's second-half surge came up short as the Titans fell 94-79 to Wichita State on Saturday at Charles Koch Arena as part of Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters on ESPN2.
Wichita State (24-5) led at the half, 46-35, before Detroit (18-10, 10-4 Horizon) trimmed the lead to 70-67 with 11:20 remaining. UDM could not get any closer as the Shockers closed the game with a 31-17 run, including eight straight free throws down the stretch.
Junior guard
Ray McCallum led the Titans with a game-high 29 points, while senior
Nick Minnerath, the Horizon League Co-Player of the Week, finished with 25 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Classmate
Doug Anderson pitched in 11 points, while junior
Evan Bruinsma added nine with six boards.
SERIES WITH LOYOLA
This will be the 123rd meeting between Detroit and Loyola, with the Ramblers owning a 67-55 lead. The Titans swept the regular season series last year, along with an 80-71 win in the first round of the Horizon League Championships at Calihan Hall. Detroit won the first meeting this season 75-63 at Gentle Arena.
ABOUT THE RAMBLERS
Christian Thomas poured in a career-best 31 points and also collected 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year, but Kent State (15-12) rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit to record a 70-63 victory over Loyola University Chicago (14-14) at Gentile Arena. Thomas' 31 points are the most by a Rambler since Ben Averkamp totaled 31 in a win at Toledo on December 10, 2011.
SENIOR DRIVEN
Detroit seniors
Doug Anderson and
Nick Minnerath have combined to average 26.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, which results in 34 percent of the scoring and 32 percent of the rebounding for the Titans.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Ray McCallum currently leads the Titans in three categories this season scoring (19.0 ppg), assists (4.6 apg), and steals (1.9 spg.) and is also climbing up the career record board in all three. McCallum has 1,534 points (12th), 434 assist (7th) and 164 steals (4th) in his career. The last Titan to rank among the top-10 in all three of those categories was Rashad Phillips '01. Phillips finished his spectacular career with 2,319 points (1st), 548 assists (4th) and 190 steals (2nd). McCallum needs 68 points to reach that plateau.
ALL ALONE
Ray McCallum is also close to becoming the first Titan ever to record 1,500 points (1,534), 500 rebounds (461), 500 assists (434) and 150 steals (164) in a career.
ONE OF THE BEST IN THE NATION
The Titans are one of the best teams in the nation in turnover margin where they rank fifth (+5.5) overall. Detroit has forced 447 turnovers, while only committing 299 through 27 games this season. VCU (+8.3), Arkansas (+6.6), Louisville (+6.1) and Eastern Kentucky (+5.6) are the only teams with a higher turnover ratio than the Titans.
RACKING UP SOME POINTS
As a team the Titans lead the Horizon League and rank sixth in the nation in scoring with 79.0 points per game. The Titans average 84.6 points per game at home, compared to 73.1 per game on the road, but the defense has stayed steady only giving up 68.9 at home and 70.5 on the road.
RED, WHITE AND BLUE
The Titans have worn three different uniform colors this season and are .500 or better in all three. Detroit is 10-3 in white uniforms this season, 5-4 in red and 3-3 in blue.
