McCallum Named Lute Olson All-American

BOSTON (3/25/13) – University of Detroit Mercy junior guard Ray McCallum was named to the 2013 Lute Olson All-America Team, announced on Monday. McCallum is the first Titan since Willie Green (2003) and 13th in program history to earn All-American honors.

McCallum, the Horizon League Player of the Year, finished his junior campaign averaging 18.7 ppg, which ranked 35th nationally. McCallum also handed out 4.5 assists per game while grabbing 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals. The junior was the first player since fellow Titan Rashad Phillips in 2000-01 to earn both preseason and postseason Player of the Year honors.

McCallum has 1,618 points (8th), 451 assists (7th) and 175 steals (4th) in his career. The last Titan to rank among the top-10 in all three of those categories was Rashad Phillips '01. Phillips finished his spectacular career with 2,319 points (1st), 548 assists (4th), and 190 steals (2nd). McCallum is also close to becoming the first Titan ever to record 1,600 points (1,618), 500 rebounds (486), 500 assists (451), and 200 steals (175) in a career.

Rather than assemble a first team, second team, third team and honorable mention; the Lute Olson All-America team is one squad consisting one 21 players.

The team includes Anthony Bennett (UNLV), Trey Burke (Michigan), Ian Clark (Belmont), Ramon Galloway (La Salle), Erick Green (Virginia Tech), Shane Larkin (Miami), Ray McCallum (Detroit), Doug McDermott (Creighton), Ben McLemore (Kansas), Shabazz Muhammad (UCLA), Mike Muscala (Bucknell), Victor Oladipo (Indiana), Kelly Olynyk (Gonzaga), Mason Plumlee (Duke), Otto Porter, Jr. (Georgetown), Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State), Russ Smith (Louisville), Deshaun Thomas (Ohio State), Jeff Withey (Kansas), Nate Wolters (South Dakota State), Cody Zeller (Indiana).

The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons with his respective team. Freshmen and first-year transfers can be named to the All-America team, but are not eligible to receive the Player of the Year honors.

The award is named in honor of coaching great Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997.

The 2013 Award will be presented at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
