INDIANAPOLIS (4/25/2013) -- Junior
Lindsey Lammers became the first Titan in school history to be named the Horizon League Player of the Year, and head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan was selected the HL Coach of the Year as the conference released its yearly awards at the championship banquet at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., on Thursday evening.
Lammers was also one of three Titans named All-Horizon League joining senior
Collette Hansen and junior
Christina Thorne, all of whom are currently tallying career bests in averages. It is the second time UDM has had three players on the All-League team with the other in 2008 (Mandi Dupuis, Rachel McHenry & Ashley Hamilton).
All-Horizon League for the second year in a row, Lammers – the defending HL medalist – had an outstanding season leading the league with a 75.2 average and finishing in the top five in all seven of her events. She recorded a pair of wins taking medalist honors at the Detroit Fall Classic and at the Magnolia Spring Break Classic, while claiming runner-up at the Sunshine Spring Classic and the Black Falcon Invitational. She posted scores in the 70's or 60's in 12 of her 14 rounds, including a pair of 69's, and since the start of her sophomore year, she has won five events and placed in the top 11 in all 12 tournaments she has played in with her last 11 in the top 5.
Hansen – a team captain - was also named All-Horizon League for the second-straight season as she ranks third on the team with a 78.6 average in 18 rounds of golf, tying her career-best with a 150 at the Detroit Fall Classic. She had six top-10 finishes and was in the top 20 in eight of her nine events that she played in, placing fourth at the Titan Fall Classic, Sunshine Spring Classic and the IPFW Spring Classic.
Thorne earned the conference accolade for the first time in her career as she is second on the squad with a 76.6 average, almost eight strokes better than her sophomore year. She was in the starting line-up in all 10 events and carded 15 of her 19 rounds in the 70's, setting career marks for a round (71) and 36-hole tournament (147). She was in the top 20 eight times and in the top 10 on seven occasions, winning the Sunshine Spring Classic and finishing runner-up at the Detroit Fall Classic, the Titan Tri-Match, and the Magnolia Spring Break Classic.
The honor for Coach Ryan is the second in her career as she was selected the Coach of the Year in 2010. Coach Ryan has led the Titans to eight wins in their 10 events, an impressive feat considering UDM had just nine tournament victories in its history coming into the year. Five Titans have an average under 80 with senior
Allison Sears (78.9) and sophomore
Olivia Richards (79.7) rounding out that group, which are career highs for both of them too.
Ariel Sparrow of Cleveland State, Loyola's April Ohlendorf, Michelle Kleckner and Kelly Voigt of Valparaiso and Youngstown State's Sarah Heimlich rounded out the 2013 All-League Team, while Katie Pokrandt of Green Bay was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year.
The 2013 Horizon League Championship will begin tomorrow at 7:30 a.m., with the Titans teeing off at 8:40 a.m. Fans can follow all the action on Golfstat by
