Titans Watching The Selection Show
INDIANAPOLIS (4/29/2013) -- The 2013 Horizon League Champion Detroit Titans' women's golf team found out that it will travel to Norman, Ok., for the NCAA Central Regional Championship as the field for the three regionals was unveiled on Monday night on the NCAA Selection show on NCAA.com. The regionals will take place from May 9-11 at the Jimmie Austin Oklahoma Golf Club.
A total of 378 participants were selected for regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.
This season marks the second time UDM has won the Horizon League title and its second-ever appearance in a NCAA Regional, last making it in 2010 when the Titans played in the Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ind.
Detroit won the Horizon League championship with a 920 (312-303-305), running away from the field by 20 strokes over Youngstown State (940) and 26 better than Cleveland State (946). All five Detroit golfers finished in the top 20 in the event, with four earning All-Tournament in juniors
Christina Thorne and
Lindsey Lammers, sophomore
Olivia Richards and senior
Allison Sears.
Those four combined with senior
Collette Hansen also gave the Titans five players averaging under 80 on the season. Those great numbers helped the Titans claim nine titles in just 11 events this year, matching the most wins they had in their program history coming into the season.
The NCAA Central Regional field will also include host Oklahoma, Duke, Florida, Washington, Arizona State, UC Davis, Texas Tech, North Carolina State, Michigan State, Iowa State, Southern Methodist, Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Wake Forest, TCU, Gonzaga, Indiana, UTSA, Mississippi State, Wisconsin, Lamar, Illinois State and Butler as well as individuals from UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Wilmington, Central Arkansas and San Diego State.
The Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club has hosted the 1997 Oklahoma State Amateur and NCAA Regional, the Big 12 Women's Championship in 1998 and 2010, and most notably the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in 2009. The course is also slated to host the 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship and plays to a Par 72 and is 7,387 yards.
In 2010, Detroit was 23rd at the Central Regional, with Alainna Stefan leading the way tying for 91st.
