DETROIT (4/30/13) – The Detroit men's tennis team celebrated its record setting season with a banquet at the Glenn Oaks Country Club on Tuesday night.
Senior
Pablo Nunez was named the team MVP after earning nine wins on the year with six at fourth singles and a pair in the Horizon League. He earned a Bronze Medal at the X Central America Games representing his home country of Costa Rica. He earned a singles and doubles win in the Horizon League Championships against Youngstown State to propel the Titans to its first semi-final appearance in the Horizon League Championships since the program was reinstated in 2008.
Mike Basha was named Most Improved and
Tanguy Crosnier was named Hardest Worker. Basha had 18 wins on the year with three wins at first and third singles and six coming at fourth singles. Basha earned a win in the HL Championships semi-final round at first singles in straight sets against eventual champions Cleveland State. Crosnier may not have made an appearance in a match but his work in practice did not go unnoticed. His hard work and determination caught the eyes of the coaches in his freshman year.
The Captain's Award goes to
Alex Latosinsky while the Coach's Award was given to
Larry Brown. Latosinsky was a leader on and off the court. He had eight wins on the year in singles play and tied for the team lead with 10 doubles wins. In the classroom he was a 4-year member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and was named to the Academic All-Horizon Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.78. Brown was another face that wouldn't make a big impression in the box score, but his attitude and work ethic made a big positive impact on the team this season.
Cesar Escobar Serrano had 12 wins on the year, giving him the school record for most singles wins in a career. He now has 59 career wins, four more than women's head coach Pjotrs Necajevs. He earned two post season wins against Youngstown State and HL champions Cleveland State. He also has 32 career doubles wins to put him eighth in school history.
Freshman
Rafael Orantes was named the team's Newcomer of the Year. Orantes ended his freshman campaign tied for the team lead with 12 singles wins, three in conference action, putting him in a tie for 16th in school history for a single season. He had key conference wins in singles play against UIC and Valparaiso and had doubles wins against Youngstown State and Valpo.
Jay Joshi was awarded the Sportsmanship Award and
Chris Cheung earned the High Percentage Player honoree. Joshi was a true team player, leading the team with 10 doubles wins and four in conference play. On or off the court he was a true class act, always treating his competitors with the upmost respect. Cheung had seven wins on the year and was consistent throughout the lineup, with a pair of wins coming at fourth, fifth and sixth singles each, adding one more at third singles. In doubles play Cheung earned seven wins at the third spot and added another win in the second slot.
The Titans finished the year with a 9-14 (1-5 HL) record, the second straight year with nine wins. This is the first year Detroit has made it to the second round of the Horizon League Championships since the program was reinstated in 2009.
