More on the Historic Titan Victory
CHICAGO (4/6/13) – The Detroit women's tennis team snapped UIC's streak of 146-straight Horizon League victories Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 win in Chicago.
"We had great energy from beginning to end," said head coach Pjotrs Necajevs. "The team kept believing in themselves and fought very hard to the end. That was the difference maker today."
Nino Sujashvili and
Irina Slizovskaya took second doubles, 8-4, and
Raina Halabi and
Chloe Karoub clinched the doubles point by taking third doubles, 8-6.
Kulikovskaya took her match at fourth singles in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Karoub lost a tough match at first singles, falling in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Slizovskaya battled hard and earned a win at third singles, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
At sixth singles,
Elena Strakhova dropped her first set, 5-7, but battled back to take the second set, 6-3. She was down 3-0 in the third set but fought back to take it, 7-5, and clinch the victory for UDM.
"This is a huge win for the program," said Necajevs. "We are rewriting the history from the beginning. I would like dedicate this win to former players and supporters of Titan Tennis; we couldn't have done it without you."
Detroit is now 8-5 (2-2 HL) and will play at Valparaiso on Sunday.
