Horizon League Release
INDIANAPOLIS (6/15/2013) -- A dozen student-athletes from the University of Detroit Mercywere named to the Horizon League Spring Academic All-League team as the Horizon League announced the 2013 honorees. The Titans had the third highest number of student-athletes honored in the league behind UIC and Valparaiso who had 19 honorees apiece.
91 total student-athletes in the conference were named to the team with balloting done by the League's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors. The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
The UDM men's track and field team led the way with six student-athletes as graduate students
Aviram Campbell and
Bob Radlich along with seniors
Edwin Gay,
Taylor Hennrick,
Vince Lefler, and
Chris Smalley were all recognized.
Radlich and Hennrick earn their second Academic All-League honor while Smalley garners the recognition for the fifth time in his career. It is the first for Campbell, Lefler, and Gay
Women's golf also had multiple honorees as senior
Collette Hansen and juniors
Lindsey Lammers and
Christina Thorne were named to the list.
It is the second honor for both Hansen and Lammers while it is the first for Thorne.
Individual honorees included junior
Sara Cupp (softball), junior
Elena Strakhova (women's tennis), and senior
Simon Reyers (men's golf).
Reyers and Cupp earn recognition for the second time while Strakhova makes her first appearance on the Academic All-League team.
