McCallum Signs Rookie Contract with Kings

SACRAMENTO (7/19/13) - Former University of Detroit Mercy All-American point guard Ray McCallum, the most consistent Sacramento King in the NBA Summer League, signed a rookie deal with the organization on Thursday. McCallum the 36th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, is the first Titan to be drafted by the Kings in the Sacramento era. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

McCallum, the 2013 Horizon League Player of the Year and Lute Olson All-American, is averaging 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in the Summer League.

Last year McCallum helped lead Detroit to its second-straight postseason appearance with a trip to the NIT, along with recording its second-straight 20 win season finishing 20-13 overall.

He led the Titans in points (18.7), assists (4.5) and steals (1.9) for the third-straight season as well as minutes played (36.6). He also led the Horizon League in scoring and steals, while finishing second in assists, assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2) and minutes played. McCallum was sixth in field goal percentage (49.1) and had at least one steal in all but six games, while scoring in double figures in all but five games on the season.

McCallum recorded the best single game performance of the last decade in division I basketball with 16 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and four steals in Titans win over Cleveland State. The last player to put up those type of numbers was Connecticut's Ben Gordon with 17 points, 16 rebounds, 11 assists and five steals vs. Iona in December 2003.

In addition to All-Horizon League first team honors, he was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 12 first team and was one of 10 student-athletes to be named to the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team.
