DETROIT (7/2/13) – The Titan Club – a booster organization for the University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Department - hosted its 3rd Annual Titan Club Basketball Camp for Special Needs players on Friday (June 28) at Calihan Hall.
Forty-five participants were joined by their families, friends, and many Titan Club volunteers as they enjoyed a fun day of developing basketball skills.
"More volunteers, staff and coaches joined us this year, on Dick Vitale Court, to help make this day even more special for our participants," stated Assistant Director of Marketing & Promotions Melissa Kopriva. "Our coaches once again did a fantastic job providing a fun and engaging experience."
Former Titan men's basketball player Bernie Fuhs served as camp director for the third year, leading a team of top coaches including fellow Titan alum Jimmy Twymann, as well as Trey Zackery, who played at Michigan State University, and former Arizona State University student-athlete Lorron James.
The UDM women's basketball team along with assistant coach Emily Geary also assisted with instruction throughout the day. After stretching out with Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning Aaron Short, campers performed a series of drills and skill sets under the watchful eyes of the coaches, and also competed in a free throw shooting contest.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly hearing from men's basketball coaches
Ray McCallum and
Jay Smith about hard work, and always having fun with the game of basketball. Smith then capped it off with a clapping game that brought a smile to everyone face.
Camp participants and volunteers alike felt that the 2013 Titan Club Basketball Camp was a resounding success, and are looking forward to an even more exciting event in 2014.
