With less than two weeks left before the start of the school year, DetroitTitans.com recently caught up with Brie Wilcox of the women's basketball team to see what the junior forward has been up to over the summer.
You missed most of last season dealing with an injury, how hard was it not playing for much of the year?
It was very hard to sit out. I felt like over the summer and preseason I had put in a lot of work and was very excited to play. It's really difficult to go through an injury, especially one lasting as long as mine. However not being able to participate, I tried to support the team throughout the season. I can't wait until my body is healthy and I'll be able to help on the court as well.
Talk about the frustration of dealing with an injury when your teammates are working so hard out on the court?
It's great to see the strides our team has made through this summer! I am definitely the biggest cheerleader, but of course I know these are very important weeks. Our team has been very dedicated to improving this summer and I can't wait until I'm 100% healthy and can make the strides necessary to be ready for preseason. It's never fun sitting out, but I try to cheer them on and be there for them mentally and give them as much motivation as I can.
What are you looking to accomplish this season as a team and as a player?
Individually, I want to be able to use my size and speed and bring a bunch of energy on the full court and be a major presence on the boards. As a team, I see us as a very athletic quick paced group. We have a lot of new bodies and a lot of talent and the sky is the limit this year!
What have you done to enjoy the summer off the court?
Earlier in the summer, I got to spend a lot of time with my family which is very important to me. I spent almost every weekend of my summer traveling around watching my little brother play baseball. It was also great because my sister graduated high school and I got to be there. We went to Niagara Falls, had a couple beach days, and got to spend a lot of quality time together.
Hailing from Canada, what are some of the great summer destinations that it has to offer and where would you advise people to go?
I always love Niagara Falls, on the Canadian side of course. Seeing the falls is always beautiful and amazing, but there is a tourist attraction called Clifton Hill and it has a lot of haunted houses, wax museums, arcades, and you can go behind the falls and the Maid of the Mist. I love the mirror mazes, but in Toronto, I love to go up the CN Tower. It's always lit up at night time so you can see really far when you are up there. There is a glass floor you can walk on and a revolving restaurant, definitely something to experience!
What is the best summer vacation spot that you have ever been on?
To be honest, I've never really vacationed except for when I was real young and I went to Disney World in Florida. Until last year, I went up north to Indian River with a teammate. They have a house right on the lake and I got to do a lot of things for the first time like tubing, jet skiing and riding on the boats. It's so much fun out on the water and in the sun.
What are you majoring in and what are you looking to do after college?
I am majoring in biology and I'm planning on continuing my education to be a physiotherapist. I definitely want to stay in the athletic field and stay fit. I want to get a house close to my family and travel as much as possible. I have so much I want to see around the world and so many things I want to do... That is after winning the Horizon League these next two years.
