With less than a week left before the start of the school year, DetroitTitans.com recently caught up with Senee Shearer of the women's basketball team to see what the senior guard has been up to over the summer.
You did a lot to get back last season from your knee injury and you spent all of last summer rehabbing so how is it returning to a normal summer practice schedule?
Even though I still have maintenance rehab three times a week, I'm glad that it's not every day like last summer. It feels great to be able to get back into open gyms and workouts, especially because I'm doing full participation without a brace.
As one of the two seniors on a young team, how important has your leadership been in working with the young players this summer?
It's been very important. I had to step up vocally with our freshmen here in the summer. I also had to learn to control my emotions a lot better because I realized that they really do look at my behavior and use that as a model of what's acceptable. I've also been reading a book called "Mind Gym" to help with that.
You spend a lot of time working on your game this summer. What is the one key thing that you have really improved on going into your final season?
Just gaining my confidence back in my ability to get to the basket. Last season, I played timid coming off the injury, but now I feel like I'll have to and will be able to score in a few different ways.
What have you done to enjoy the summer off the court?
I had a four day weekend for my 21st birthday in May during which I made a day trip to Chicago to shop. Also for the 4th of July, I went camping with my family for a few days.
Growing up in Detroit your whole life, what are some of the things that you have done to take advantage of living in the city during the summer?
Growing up in the city, I've had the advantage of being able to participate in both summer sessions without being homesick or missing out on things with my high school friends and teammates.
What is the best summer vacation spot that you have ever been too?
I've never really had a summer vacation because I've always been playing. I look forward to having one next summer, maybe in Miami or Los Angeles for a few weeks.
What are you majoring in and what are you looking to do after college?
I'm an Industrial/Organizational Psychology major double minoring in Leadership and Business. I want to continue my playing career at the pro level. When I am finished playing, I want to use my degree and become a sports management consultant or something involving sports and traveling. I also want to start a couple different mentoring programs in the city.
