2013-14 Non-Conference Schedule
DETROIT (8/5/13) – Being a host school for the 2K Sports Classic benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project, along with visits to both the University of Connecticut and North Carolina State University highlights the non-conference portion of the 2013-14 University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball schedule, which was announced today (Monday, Aug. 5).
The 2K Sports Classic benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project has Detroit scheduled to host three-straight days of basketball from Nov. 22-24. Each day will consist of a minimum two games, with the Titans closing each day with the nightcap. The entire field for the 2K Sports Classic will be announced later.
"We have set up one of the stronger non-conference schedules in the Horizon League and by playing a schedule like this it helps develop us for our goal to compete for a League championship," said head men's basketball coach Ray McCallum. "I think these are the type of schedules that our players want compete in. They want to play against top-20 teams and I believe that's what we have given them this year."
Five of the Titans non-conference opponents played in the postseason last year, including three that reached the NCAA Tournament.
UDM will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 8, as the Titans will visit the University of South Alabama, before returning home to host U-M Dearborn on Monday, Nov. 11. Detroit will then travel east for a marquee matchup at UConn on Thursday, Nov. 14, before visiting James Madison University on Tuesday, Nov. 19. The Huskies finished 20-10 last season under first year head coach Kevin Ollie, while James Madison finished 21-15 overall, including a win in the NCAA Tournament First Four in Round, before falling to Indiana University in the Second Round.
Following the 2K Sports Classic the Titans will travel to Tampa, Fla., to take on the University of South Florida on Saturday, Nov. 30, before a visit to the University of Toledo on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
Detroit will return home to host Rhode Island on Sunday, Dec. 8, before heading south again, this time to visit N.C. State on Saturday, Dec. 14. The Wolfpack finished 24-11 last season, including 11-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), before falling to Temple in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Titans will make one more trip to Ohio to face the University of Akron on Wednesday, Dec. 18 and Bowling Green State University on Sunday, Dec. 22, before returning home to wrap-up the non-conference schedule against Indiana Tech (Dec. 23) and Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 30), both games at Calihan Hall. Akron finished 26-7 overall last year including a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
