2013-14 Detroit Women's Basketball Schedule
Interview With Coach Rademacher
DETROIT (9/11/2013) -- The 2013-14 University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball schedule is now all set with the revelation of its two in-season tournaments and the official release of the Horizon League schedule.
"Our philosophy has been that we are going to go ahead and have quite a bit of balance on our schedule," said head coach Autumn Rademacher. "Very challenging and uphill battles, but in the past, we have been able to compete with the Penn States and the Georgias and obviously the Green Bays that have been ranked in the country and we are very excited for those games and our kids really look forward to them."
Detroit found out the field for Florida Atlantic's Thanksgiving Day Tournament as the Titans will open with Rhode Island on Nov. 29 and depending on the outcome of the contest, will play either host FAU or Georgia Southern on Nov. 30.
The following week, UDM will make the short trip across the Ohio border to take part in the Toledo Invitational and will open that two-game weekend with Toledo on Dec. 6 before facing Chicago State on Dec. 7.
"We have such a young roster and they need to understand that they can go out and play and we want their full 100% effort," said Coach Rademacher. "Just leave it all on the floor, but certainly the next morning, they might feel those bumps and bruises but they have to get up and perform the same way if not better and we like to play in those tournaments.
The four games are an addition to a non-conference schedule that already includes the likes of Michigan, Eastern Michigan, IPFW, Ball State, Madonna, and Lawrence Tech at home, while playing Michigan State, Canisius, and Western Michigan on the road.
A Sunday road trip to Wright State will then start the conference campaign and a swing through Chicago and Green Bay is set to close out league play.
"A lot of people have departed and a lot of teams are really new and I think it's going to be anybody's game," added Coach Rademacher. "The talent level has got a lot better in the league and a lot of teams have a great shot to win the title and we are one of them."
After a daunting non-conference slate, Detroit will open the HL season at Wright State on Jan. 5, a team that UDM beat three times last season including in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinals.
The Titans will then return home – where UDM was 16-1 last season, tied for the second most wins in the country, and 7-1 in the HL - for three straight starting with Cleveland State on Jan. 9 and a battle with in-state rival Oakland on Jan. 11 in what is set as a doubleheader with the men also hosting the Golden Grizzlies that day. The homestand will conclude with UIC on Jan. 16.
"We love our homecourt and our team really enjoys playing in front of their fans, family and friends and we want to be one of the toughest places to play in the conference," added Coach Rademacher.
Detroit will hit the road for three games right after that visiting Valparaiso (Jan. 23), Milwaukee (Jan. 25) and Youngstown State (Jan. 29).
The month of February will see the red, white, and blue alternate between homestands and road trips as UDM welcomes Green Bay on Feb. 1 and Milwaukee on Feb. 8 before getting on the bus to Oakland (Feb. 13) and Cleveland State (Feb. 15). The month ends with a pair of games at home as Wright State (Feb. 22) and Valparaiso (Feb. 26) make their way to the Motor City.
The contests against the Raiders and Crusaders will be the front end of a three-game run at home as the regular season docket on Dick Vitale Court will conclude with the Penguins on Mar. 1 in another Titan doubleheader with the men.
The regular season will come to an end the following week as Detroit heads to UIC on Mar. 6 before wrapping up the schedule at Green Bay on Mar. 8.
Times for all home and road games are still being adjusted and once they are finalized, they will be displayed on DetroitTitans.com.
