DETROIT (9/27/2013) -- A new year brings new leadership to the University of Detroit Mercy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as the organization announced its officers for the 2013-14 season.
Through a vote of the organization's members, seniors
Adam Bedell from the men's soccer and
Sara Cupp of the Titan softball squad were named Co-Presidents, while senior
Senee Shearer of the women's basketball team was named the Secretary.
"We have so many dedicated student-athletes who take their time to be a part of SAAC and they selected three outstanding leaders for this year," said
Amy Gasahl, UDM's Academic Coordinator & Assistant Director of Compliance & SAAC administrator. "SAAC has done so many great things over the last few years and with these three student-athletes leading the way, I look forward to another big year of service from the group."
Bedell is a senior captain this season and coming off a year where he was named the Horizon League Player of the Year, HL Offensive Player of the Year, and First Team All-League and led the league with 11 goals and 27 points. He currently leads this year's team with five points on two goals along with an assist. He has been a member of the UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll, the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll, and was selected to the HL Fall Academic Team in 2012.
Cupp is one of UDM's top hitters and was tabbed First Team All-HL last season after topping the team in a number of offensive categories including batting average (.387), on base percentage (.475), slugging percentage (.613), hits (53), RBI (24), doubles (13), home runs (6), and walks (20). She has been a repeating member of Detroit AD's Honor Roll and was named a NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete in 2011. She will enter her senior year third in school history with 17 home runs, just one away from second and nine in back of the all-time lead.
Shearer is one of the senior leaders for a young Titan squad and is coming off a year in which she recovered from an ACL injury to rank second on the team in scoring (11.6), while also tallying 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. She also led the team in 3-pointers (53), three-point field-goal percentage (39.3%), and free-throw percentage (79.3%). She will enter her senior campaign tied for seventh place on the Titan all-time three-pointer's list with 134. Off the court, she is also a member of the UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
SAAC is a group of student-athletes who are brought together to offer insight on the experience of being a UDM student-athlete. These student-athletes represent their peers and teammates when offering their input on rules, regulations and policies that affect their everyday lives on the campus and serve as a direct link between the University of Detroit Mercy student-athletes and administration. The members of the UDM SAAC committee are very active in the community, sponsoring many community service initiatives as well as organizing student-athlete events and assisting in overall student-athlete well-being.
