INDIANAPOLIS (1/14/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team received two first place votes and was picked to finish second in the Horizon League in the 2014 Horizon League Preseason Poll.
The Horizon League coaches each had a vote and were not allowed to vote for their own team.
17-time defending Horizon League Women's Tennis champion UIC claimed the top spot taking six first place votes and 62 overall points. Detroit's two first place votes and 53 points were second with Youngstown State taking the other first place vote. In the overall voting, Cleveland State was second with 49 points, Youngstown State had 47 followed by Milwaukee (38), Wright State (29), Oakland (22), Green Bay (14), and Valparaiso (9).
The Titans are coming off a 12-6 2013 record and a 5-2 league mark. Last year,
Detroit became the first Horizon League team to beat the UIC Flames in 146-straight matches as UDM earned a 4-3 win on Apr. 6 in Chicago.
The Flames ended the UDM season last year with a 4-1 win over the Titans in the Horizon League Semifinals.
Detroit will begin the 2014 dual-match campaign this Friday against Eastern Michigan at 8:00 p.m. That match will be played at the official indoor home of the UDM men's and women's varsity tennis programs at the
Franklin Athletic Complex in Southfield.
