Game Notes vs. Green Bay

DETROIT (1/31/2014) --
The red, white and blue Titans will be decked out in pink on Saturday as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team opens February by hosting Green Bay at historic Calihan Hall. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m., on Dick Vitale Court.

With February marking the month for Play 4Kay, UDM will be wearing pink uniforms for all four of its home games as the Titans get ready for their Play 4Kay game next Saturday against Milwaukee.

Titan fans can follow every UDM game this season through the women's basketball GAMEDAY CENTRAL page located on the Titans Athletic Website that will keep fans one click away from all the action. This page will feature links for live stats (audio and video when applicable) as well as links for all the latest info while also making it easy to find the Titans on social media and to purchase photos and game tickets. The Game Day Central page also carries all the information on each opponent from who is leading the all-time series to who won the last game.

Detroit dropped a heartbreaker its last time out at Youngstown State as the Titans built up a 14-point lead, but saw the first-place Penguins chip away, eventually falling 80-71. UDM had four players in doubles figures, including two freshmen record career highs as Haleigh Ristovski hit five 3-pointers for 15 points and Minisha Frederick-Childress tallied 11 points and six assists.

The Titans once again played shorthanded without the services of senior Megan Hatter and junior Ellisha Cosby as the two are still out with injuries. Sophomore guard Rosanna Reynolds was already lost for the year just three games in with a knee injury.

Senior Senee Shearer drained three 3-pointers at YSU and is now just five away from second place in school history, held by head coach Autumn Rademacher at 201, while Michelle James' school record 217 is also in reach. Shearer is also 16th in school history with 1,068 points.

DETROIT VS. GREEN BAY
The Titans have had some success against Green Bay in the last six years posting a pair of wins, but the Phoenix still lead the all-time series, 39-7. UDM's seven wins is the second most among Horizon League teams, trailing only Milwaukee's 18.

Detroit is 5-15 all-time against Green Bay at home, but UDM has lost its last three in the Motor City.

ABOUT THE PHOENIX
Green Bay - who has won 15-straight Horizon League regular season titles - enters the game at 11-7, 4-2 in the conference. After dropping two-straight HL games, the Phoenix has rebounded to win three in a row over Cleveland State, Wright State and Oakland.

Kaili Lukan leads the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game, while her older sister Megan Lukan is tallying 9.9 ppg., and is second in the Horizon League with 4.4 assists per night. Breannah Ranger is netting 10.0 ppg., and a team-high 7.3 rebounds, and freshman Tesha Buck is posting 9.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists.

Green Bay is actually eighth in the league in scoring at 67.3 ppg., as well as eighth in three-point field goal percentage (29.0%), but the Phoenix rank first in scoring defense (58.6), field-goal percentage defense (38.6%) and assists (15.5).

WE MEET AGAIN
Head coach Autumn Rademacher and Green Bay head coach Kevin Borseth were both members of the same coaching staff at Green Bay.

From 2004-08, the Phoenix compiled a sparkling 104-22 record, dominating the Horizon League in the process while making a pair of NCAA Tournament and WNIT appearances.

As a head coach, Rademacher's Titans defeated a Michigan team coached by Borseth, 67-48, in Ann Arbor on Dec. 18, 2010.

THE MISSING KEY?
Detroit has seven career wins against Green Bay and head coach Autumn Rademacher has been involved in six of the seven victories.

As a player, Coach Rademacher helped the Titans defeat the Phoenix in 1995, 1996 and twice in 1997, while as a coach, she guided UDM to victories in 2010 and 2012.

The only win that did not see Coach Rademacher in uniform or on the sidelines was a 56-50 overtime triumph against the Phoenix at home on Jan. 24, 2004.

SHEARER NAMED TO 2014 NANCY LIEBERMAN AWARD WATCH LIST
Numbers are one thing, but recognition among the greats of college basketball is another as senior Senee Shearer was named to the 2014 Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Jan. 15.

The award recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. Candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman.

Shearer was joined by 28 other players on the initial watch list, which includes the likes of Odyssey Sims of Baylor, Bria Hartley of Connecticut, Duke's Chelsea Gray, Amber Orrange of Stanford and Tennessee's Ariel Massengale. She is also the only player from the Horizon League as well as from a school in Michigan on the list.

The list will be narrowed down to a final 20 in February, then final five by March. The Lieberman Award winner will be announced during Final Four weekend activities.

Previous winners of the Nancy Lieberman Award include last year's recipient Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Sue Bird (Connecticut), Renee Montgomery (Connecticut) and Diana Taurasi (Connecticut).

AMONG THE NATION'S LEADERS
Senior Senee Shearer is currently ninth in the nation with 3.11 three-point field goals per game. Shearer has 62 trifectas on the year, tied for seventh in the nation.

KNOCK EM DOWN ROOK
Freshman Haleigh Ristovski turned in a great performance at Youngstown State her last time out as the rookie connected on five 3-pointers en route to a season-high 15 points.

Ristovski came into the game just 5-of-24 from three, but ended the contest 5-of-8, while adding five rebounds and a season-best two blocks playing all 40 minutes.

SHEARER NETS 1,000
The UDM 1,000-point club added another member as senior Senee Shearer became the 19th player to reach the mark against UIC on Jan. 16.

Shearer now has 1,068 points and is ready to climb higher as she is just 75 points away from 16th place.

Below is a list of people ahead of her in scoring in Titan history.
14th Jeanie Hill - 1,199 - 1994-97
15th Mandy Chandler - 1,181 - 1987-91
16th Lindsey Pasquinzo - 1,143 - 2002-06
17th Senee Shearer - 1,068 - 2010-pre.

Shearer is currently second in the Horizon League - and 33rd in the nation - in scoring at 20.3 points per game, trailing only Wright State's Kim Demmings' 21.1

She has already scored a career-high 406 points this season in 20 games, more than her previous career best of 367 she totaled in 33 games as a sophomore.

Her 406 total points is second in the HL and 30th in the nation.

IT'S TAY TIME
Tayelor McCalister had a fine start to her sophomore year with career highs in nearly every category in her first four games, before an injury forced her out of five straight.

Her offense has once again picked up in the last seven games with four double-digit performances, including twice posting a career high 17 points against Wright State and at Milwaukee.

Against WSU, she also had seven rebounds in just 24 minutes, while tying her career best with eight boards versus the Panthers.

She netted 14 points with five rebounds and five assists her last time out at Youngstown State and also recorded 11 points, five rebounds and four assists against Cleveland State on Jan. 9, and has had nine and eight points, respectively, against Oakland and UIC.

She nearly had a triple-double against Eastern Michigan earlier in the year with eight points, a career-high eight rebounds and nine assists.

Against Michigan on Nov. 16, McCalister was in double figures with 14 points (7-9 FG) to go with six rebounds and four assists.

In the last seven games, McCalister is tallying 10.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

On the year, she is averaging 9.7 points - fourth on the team - a team-high 3.2 assists and 1.3 steals as well as 4.0 rebounds per game.

FEELING PINK
If you are coming to historic Calihan Hall this month to see the red, white and blue, than you will see a different color as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team will sport pink uniforms for its home games during the month of February.

The team will also be part of Play 4Kay next Saturday, Feb. 8, in its home game against Milwaukee.

The Play 4Kay initiative (formerly known as WBCA Pink Zone) is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2.8 million to support women's cancer research.
For more information on the event, visit play4kay.org.

Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. With the creation of the Fund, Kay hoped to raise money to further cutting-edge research conducted by the nation's top doctors and medical experts to allow more and more cancer patients to have access to experimental drugs and clinical trials. Since the majority of these research projects are privately funded, these researchers desperately need our support in order for them to continue to make strides in finding a cure for cancer.

To date, the Fund has contributed over $3.8 million in support of women's cancer research. Due to our unique partnership with The V Foundation, we utilize their Scientific Advisory Board to ensure your donations support the cancer research projects with the most potential. Thus, grant recipients funded by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund have remarkable standing within the scientific community.

FOUR OUT
The Titans had four players in double figures its last time out at Youngstown State as senior Senee Shearer (17), freshman Haleigh Ristovski (15), sophomore Tayelor McCalister and freshman Minisha Frederick-Childress (11) each came up with the offensive figure.

It was the seventh time this season that UDM has seen four players reach double figures in the same game.

ALL GAME FOR RISTOVSKI
Titan rookie Haleigh Ristovski is doing a good job of protecting the ball, something that a lot of rookies have trouble with.

She currently has a 30-9 assist-to-turnover ratio on the year and is also doing a good job hitting the glass at 3.9 rebounds per game, with a season-high 10 caroms at Wright State.

In her last five games, she is averaging 8.0 points and 4.2 rebounds, shooting 47.1% (16-of-34) from the field and 8-of-16 from three.

During this span, she tallied 15 points and five boards at Youngstown State and 11 points with five assists versus UIC.

A GALLOWAY-IN EFFORT
Freshman Megan Galloway was starting to progress until an ankle injury slowed her down, but she was back in the starting line-up against Cleveland State on Jan. 9 and posted her first collegiate double-double with 13 points and a career-best 10 rebounds.

At Toledo on Dec. 6, she scored 14 points and added eight rebounds.

Galloway – who didn't play in the season opener and was limited to just four minutes in the second game of the year against NAIA member Lawrence Tech – has started 10 of her last 12 games in the middle for UDM, missing the EMU contest with an injury.

At the FAU Thanksgiving Classic, she tallied 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, while shooting 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the field in tallying a season-high 16 points with seven rebounds against Georgia Southern and seven points and six rebounds with two assists vs. Rhode Island, earning the HL Freshman of the Week.

Galloway has now found that stroke from earlier in the season averaging 6.1 points and 6.0 rebounds in her last seven games, shooting 19-of-40 (47.5%) from the field.

During the span, she has had:
6-pts, 11-rebs. at Youngstown State
13-pts, 10-rebs. vs Cleveland State
6-pts, 2 rebs. vs Oakland
8-pts, 6-rebs., 4-steals, 2-blocks vs. UIC
5-pts, 7-rebs., 1-block at Valparaiso
5-pts, 6-rebs., 1-block at Milwaukee

A REIGN OF OFFENSE
Freshman Reyna Montgomery - who missed the UIC with an injury - returned to the line-up at Valparaiso, finishing with four points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. She continued her scoring by tying her season high with 11 points, while adding five rebounds, two steals and an assist at Milwaukee and six points with seven caroms at Youngstown State.

She had previously tied her season high with 11 points and grabbed a season-best eight rebounds with two assists against Oakland.

She originally set her season-high of 11 points against Eastern Michigan on Dec. 15, going 5-of-5 from the field in just 10 minutes.

In her last four games, she is averaging 8.0 points and 3.8 rebounds.

ON THE DL
Sophomore Rosanna Reynolds will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury early in the game at Western Michigan.

Reynolds was selected to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team last year after starting all 34 games and averaging a team-high 35.3 minutes per game, tallying 7.8 points – fifth on the team – along with 3.3 rebounds, and a team-high 4.0 assists per game (135).

Freshman Megan Galloway missed the Eastern Michigan game and fellow freshman Reyna Montgomery sat against UIC with various ailments. The Titans have also seen Tayelor McCalister and Minisha Frederick-Childress miss five games with a concussion earlier in the year.

The latest on the DL and two more key players that have not returned yet are junior Ellisha Crosby and senior Megan Hatter. Crosby has missed the last eight contests and is day-to-day with a leg injury and Hatter has missed the last seven games with a leg injury.

All told, the injured Titans have missed a total of 43 games on the season.

MIX & MATCH
Due to the injuries Detroit has racked up, the Titans have used 14 different starting line-ups.

UDM did break a trend of nine-straight games with a different five as the same five was in the books at Milwaukee and at Youngstown State, the first time since Dec. 6-7 at Toledo and against Chicago State that UDM has used the same starters.

No Titan will start every game this season due to all the injuries, and Detroit has seen 12 of its 13 players on the roster start at least one contest, with the lone exception in senior walk-on Abby McCollum who was just officially added to the roster in mid-December.

AERIAL ASSULT
A three-point threat might not be sufficient enough to describe Senee Shearer's game.

In her career, Shearer has attempted 937 shots and 599 of them have been from behind the arc. That means 63.9% of her career looks have been from downtown.

Her 201 three-point attempts on the season is second in the country behind Oregon's Katelyn Looper's (215).

Shearer also has 196 career 3-pointers, third in school history, and she is on pace to take over the category lead trailing head coach Autumn Rademacher (1993-97) by five for second and school record-holder Michelle James (1998-02) by 21 (217).

AMONG THE LEADERS
UDM is fourth in the Horizon League and 110th in the nation in scoring at 69.9 ppg.

D CRASHING THE GLASS
Sophomore DaVonna Bradford only played in seven games as a rookie, but the second-year forward is starting to find her role.

She has now posted at least five rebounds in nine of her last 15 games and had a career game with 12 points and five rebounds against Cleveland State on Jan. 9, hitting 5-of-6 shots.

She had 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds against Madonna on Dec. 30, and came back with six points and eight rebounds in the HL opener at Wright State.

In the last 11 games, she is averaging 5.9 points - going 21-of-48 (43.7%) from the field along with 4.7 rebounds per game.
