ANN ARBOR, Mich. (10/16/2014) --
Sophomore Patryk Koscielski is one win away from going back to the ITA Midwest Regional Main Draw in singles as the second-year Titan notched two wins on Thursday in the opening day of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.

The event is being held nearby at the University of Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Koscielski started the qualifying singles round with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 score over Nicky Wong of Toledo before dispatching Sergiu Muresan of Chicago State, 7-5, 7-6 (2). He is now one win shy of making the main draw as he battles Billy Pecor of Notre Dame tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.

"Patryk started out great in the morning and had to battle a little more in the afternoon," said head coach Grant Asher. "But, he played poised and he was able to win and put himself in position to get back to the main draw."

Junior Rafael Orantes nearly pulled off an upset as he dropped a three-set affair to qualifying singles top-seeded netter Brendon Kempin of Notre Dame, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.  He would later bounce back and knock off Cleveland State's Mirko Radosevic, 6-3, 6-3, in the consolation draw.

"Rafael could've won the first match, but I was happy that he was able to come back strong and get a good win in the back draw," added Coach Asher.

Freshman Nathan Ponton also had a challenge at hand in the opening round of qualifying singles as he gave Marquette's Mackenzie Stearns everything he had in a tough three-set setback, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5). In the consolation draw, he again went the distance, but could not get the final points in a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 11-9 marathon match against DePaul's Nathan de Veer.

"Rafael and Nathan both played two pretty tough opponents in the first round and they played hard," said Coach Asher. "Both had the opportunity to win their match and move on, but just couldn't keep the momentum going after winning the first set.  Both of them, especially a freshman like Nathan, will learn and benefit from this experience as we move on."

Friday's action will begin at 8:00 a.m., with the final round of qualifying singles followed by the first round of main draw doubles and main draw singles. For the latest brackets, schedule, live scoring and webcast of the championships, visit the ITA Tournament page by clicking here.
