URBANA, Illinois (10/16/2014) -- Junior
Valeryia Kulikovskaya earned a win in the opening round of qualifying singles as the ITA Midwest Regional Championships got underway at the Atkins Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Illinois on Thursday.
Kulikovskaya jumped on her opponent early en route to a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Bradley's Ariel Dechter. In the second round, she had to face Molly O'Koniewski of Notre Dame and gave the Fighting Irish foe a strong match falling in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
Also in action was sophomore
Anna Davydova as she was downed by Ohio State's Grainne O'Neal, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round, while junior
Nino Sujashvili had a bye to the second round, but dropped her match, 6-1, 7-5, to Ani Gogvadze of Eastern Michigan.
Junior
Irina Slizovskaya did not play on Thursday as she is already in the singles main draw.
The tournament will pick right up tomorrow with the final round of qualifying singles and the opening round of main draw doubles. UDM will have two doubles tandems as Sujashvili and Slizovskaya take on Notre Dame's O'Koniewski and Mary Closs at 3:00 p.m., while Kulikovskaya and Davydova will face UIC's Melika LeBlanc and Keti Mebuke at 5:15 p.m.
