DETROIT (12/4/14) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will return to Dick Vitale Court on Saturday (Dec. 6) as the Titans host South Florida during Heroes' Day at historic Calihan Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and will be televised locally on WADL-38 and nationally on ESPN3.

TITANS HOST HEROES DAYThe UDM Department of Athletics has announced it will host Heroes' Day on Saturday, Dec. 6 when the Titans men's basketball team squares off against South Florida inside historic Calihan Hall.

The event is designed to honor all active, reserve and veteran members of the armed forces along with police, firefighters and first responders.
Plans for the day include a halftime on-court performance by "The Cannon Brothers" a local youth trick ball handling duo. The K-9 Unit from Detroit Public Safety Foundation will also be present pre-game in the Hall of Fame area to do a presentation for the youth in attendance.

LAST OUTINGSix Titans scored in double figures as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team earned an 109-59 victory over visiting Aquinas College on Monday at historic Calihan Hall during Star Wars night.
Detroit (5-3) - which improved to 2-0 all-time on Star Wars night - was led by senior forward
Juwan Howard Jr. who finished with a game-high 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting, while his classmate
Brandan Kearney recorded a career-high with 17 points. Horizon League Freshman of the Week
Paris Bass also finished with 17 points, to go along with a game-high nine rebounds and five steals in 22 minutes of action.

Carlton Brundidge recorded a season-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting in his first start of the season, while his classmate
Anton Wilson pitched in 12 points with five assists and freshman
Jaleel Hogan scored a career-high 12 points in his first collegiate start.

Detroit finished shooting 60.3 percent (41-of-68) overall including 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from three-point range. The Titans defense held Aquinas to 39.3 percent (22-of-56) overall, while causing a season-high 23 turnovers which resulted in 35 points. Detroit also dished out a season-high 22 assists, while only turning the ball over nine times.

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDACorey Allen Jr. led three Bulls in double figures, but foul trouble slowed USF's comeback attempt in an 82-71 loss at Alabama on Tuesday night.

Allen Jr., the American Player of the Week, posted his sixth double-digit scoring game of the season with 16 points despite fouling out with 56 seconds remaining. Junior Nehemias Morillo extended his double-digit scoring streak to four with a 13-point performance that ended when the Dominican Republic native picked up his fifth foul less than 5 minutes into the second half. Sophomore Chris Perry put together his fifth double-digit effort of the season with 11 points after being called for his fourth foul with 12:44 remaining.

USF (5-2) was off to its best start since the 2009-10 season before Alabama (5-1) snapped the Bulls' two-game winning streak at Coleman Coliseum. USF actually outshot the Tide, going 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range, but the Bulls were hampered by 21 turnovers and went 9-for-19 from the free throw line.

Alabama never trailed and led by 19 more than midway through the second half before the Bulls went on an 18-7 run and cut their deficit to 71-63 with 3:58 remaining.

SERIES WITH USFDetroit leads the all-time series against South Florida 1-0 as the Titans won the first-ever meeting between the to schools last year at the Sun Dome 65-60.

FIVE-GAME HOLIDAY TICKET PACKAGEThe University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics is helping kick off the holiday season by announcing a five-game Horizon League Holiday Pack for just $55. For that price, Detroit Titans fans will get men's basketball tickets to five Horizon League home games in 2015 at historic Calihan Hall.
In addition, the first 25 fans that purchase the Holiday Pack will also receive a free Titan coffee mug (one per pack).
The tickets are good for upper reserved seating and the ticket package opens with the highly-anticipated first men's basketball meeting of the season between Detroit and Oakland on Jan. 10 in what is also the first men's basketball Metro Series rivalry meeting.
The other four conference home games in the package are against league favorite Green Bay on Jan. 17, UIC on Feb. 8, Cleveland State on Feb. 13 and Valparaiso on Feb. 25 for the regular season finale. The games are locked in and not interchangeable for another home game.

BASS NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK … AGAINUniversity of Detroit Mercy men's basketball freshman guard/forward
Paris Bass has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week following his strong performances against Maryland-Eastern Shore, Toledo and Bowling Green.

Bass garnered freshman of the week honors for the second time after averaging 14.0 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per contest in three games. He opened the week with 11 points and a team-high six rebounds in Detroit's 69-55 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore. The next night, he had his first career double-double recording 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Titans defeated Toledo – ranked 10th in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll – 82-79. Bass also had four assists, one steal and one blocked shot and was named to the Progressive Legends Classic All-Tournament team.

Bass finished the week with a career-high 17 points and a career-best four steals as Detroit fell to Bowling Green on a buzzer-beater, 64-63.
HOWARD IS ALMOST 39Detroit senior forward
Juwan Howard Jr. is closing in on becoming the 39th Titan to join the 1,000-point club. Howard enters Saturday's game with 980 points, just 20 shy of reaching 1,000. The last Titan to join the club was Jason Calliste during the 2012-13 season when he finished 31st overall with 1,107 points.

UDM SELECTED TO HOST NCAA TOURNAMENTIt was announced Monday (Nov. 17) that Detroit was selected as one of the eight host sites for first- and second-round games in the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. University of Detroit Mercy will serve as the host institution with the games being played at the new Detroit arena March 16 & 18. Exact times and ticket availability for those contests will be released at a later date.
Downtown Detroit last hosted the NCAA tournament in 2009 and 2008, when the men's Final Four and Midwest Regional were played at Ford Field, respectively. The Palace of Auburn Hills welcomed early round games in 2013. In addition to the tournament, the area has welcomed other NCAA events, including the Men's Frozen Four (2010), the Division I Wrestling Championship (2007), and the Women's Bowling National Championship (2009, 2011, 2013).
RED, WHITE AND BLUEDetroit is just one of 15 teams in the nation to have both an active player and coach with USA Basketball. Senior guard
Brandan Kearney was a member of the 2010 USA Youth Olympic Games Team that finished in fourth place with a 5-2 record in Singapore. He also played on the 2009 USA U16 National Team that captured the gold medal with a perfect 5-0 slate at the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Mendoza, Argentina.

Coach McCallum was an assistant coach for the 2000 USA World Championship For Young Men Qualifying Team and helped coach the USA to a silver medal and a 4-1 slate. His son and former Titan
Ray McCallum played on the 2011 USA World University Games Team that finished with a 7-1 record, but dropped its quarterfinal contest and returned home in fifth place.
