DETROIT (12/8/14) — University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball head coach
Ray McCallum has announced that junior center
Youssoupha Kane will be eligible to play this Saturday against No. 11 Wichita State. Kane, who has two years of eligibility remaining, will also join sophomore guard/forward
Chris Jenkins on the active roster, who is eligible on Saturday after transferring from Colorado.
A native of Thies, Senegal, Kane came to the United States through the SEEDS Foundation, a program that helps promising student-athletes from Africa, who otherwise might not have had the opportunity for secondary education.
While playing with Western Nebraska Community College, Kane averaged 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shots per game last season. As a freshman with the Cougars he averaged 4.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Jenkins, a 2012 graduate of U-D Jesuit, transferred to Detroit after redshirting his first season at Colorado. With the Cubs, Jenkins averaged 20 points and nine rebounds per game as a senior and was one of 10 finalists for the Mr. Basketball Award in Michigan. He was named first-team All-State by MLive.com and to The Detroit News All-Detroit Team. He was also a three-time All-Catholic League first-team selection.
Tip-off against Wichita State is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 13) at historic Calihan Hall and will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
