DETROIT (2/10/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team is back in the states as the Titans hosted a fundraiser in their first-ever Collegiate Am in the Bahamas from Feb. 4-9. The event was held at the Grand Lucayan Beach and Golf Resort in Freeport, Bahamas.
"It went a lot better then I ever expected it to be," said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan, the reigning 2013 Horizon League Coach of the Year. "I am looking for this to grow and become bigger and bigger every year, but for a start, it was a great event."
A total of 21 amateurs joined four members of the Detroit women's golf team in seniors
Lindsey Lammers and
Christina Thorne along with juniors
Olivia Richards and
Jessica Mallender.
The first day consisted of a scramble round with the amateurs and the four Titans as they broke into four teams. Lammers and Richards' group tallied a 7-under 65, while Thorne and Mallender's posted a 2-under 70.
In the second day of the tournament, the teams competed in a shiprio format (all play their own ball from the best drive and record the best score) and Lammers was able to lead her team to a win with a 143 (74-60) score and an event card of 199.
Richards and her team placed second with a 142 (76-66) and a 207 total, while Mallender's foursome was third with a 221 (70-83-68) and Thorne fourth at 224 (70-80-74).
"I want this event to grow and that way I can bring everyone next year," said Coach Ryan. "For these four ladies, it was a great opportunity for them to get out and get some playing time on a tough course as we get ready to defend our Horizon League title."

The Titans will officially begin the spring season in Florida from Mar. 3-4 at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Winter Park, Fla.
