Game Notes vs. Oakland

DETROIT (2/12/2014) --
The Titans found a date this week and it will take place in Rochester as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team will be in enemy territory as UDM faces the Golden Grizzlies on Thursday. The Rivalry Week game will take place at the O'rena with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.

Titan fans can follow every UDM game this season through the women's basketball GAMEDAY CENTRAL page located on the Titans Athletic Website that will keep fans one click away from all the action. This page will feature links for live stats (audio and video when applicable) as well as links for all the latest info while also making it easy to find the Titans on social media and to purchase photos and game tickets. The Game Day Central page also carries all the information on each opponent from who is leading the all-time series to who won the last game.

The Titans were clicking on all cylinders in the second half against Milwaukee their last time out as Detroit picked up its first Horizon League win with an 80-68 triumph over the Panthers. UDM had four players in double figures for the second time in three games, led by senior Senee Shearer's 21 points. Freshman Minisha Frederick-Childress corralled a season-high nine rebounds with 10 points, while freshman Haleigh Ristovski tied her season best netting 15 markers.

Detroit was also closer to full strength against Milwaukee as senior Megan Hatter returned to the line-up. The last time these two teams met, the Titans were without Hatter and junior Ellisha Crosby and then freshman Reyna Montgomery was injured in the second half and could not play the final eight minutes.

The game is the first part of a two-day Titan duel in Rochester as the men will play OU on Friday on ESPNU at 7:00 p.m.

DETROIT VS. OAKLAND
Detroit won the first five meetings, but since then, the two teams have split the last 12 games as the Titans own an 11-7 edge in the series.

UDM is 3-4 on the road against Oakland and won the last time it played in Rochester with a 74-65 triumph in 2009.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Oakland has won two in a row at home and enters the game at 10-13, 5-5 in the Horizon League.

Four Golden Grizzlies are in double digits in scoring led by Bethany Watterworth's 14.2 points per game, 11th in the conference. Elena Popkey is tallying 12.6 ppg., 6.0 rpg., and a team-high 4.1 apg., while Olivia Nash is recording 11.9 ppg., and 7.3 rpg. Kim Bee is the last of the quartet at 10.1 ppg., with a team-best 7.6 rpg.

OU is fifth in the Horizon League in scoring at 69.1 ppg., but the Golden Grizzlies are one of the better defensive teams in the conference allowing 69.2 ppg., - third in the HL – as well as fourth in field-goal percentage defense (41.3%).

FREDERICK-CHILDRESS TABBED HL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
After nearly posting a double-double and helping the Titans win their first conference game, freshman Minisha Frederick-Childress was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week this past Monday.

Frederick-Childress tallied 10 points, a career-high nine rebounds and four assists as UDM upended Milwaukee, 80-68, for its first HL win of the season on Saturday on Dick Vitale Court. She also added a steal in 33 minutes of work.

Originally from Flint, but she played her last three years of high school ball in North Mankato, Minn., Frederick-Childress was inserted into the starting line-up four games ago and is averaging 8.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.0 steals in that span with a career high 11 points and six assists at Youngstown State and the 10-point outing with nine boards against the Panthers.

She also has nearly a 2-1 assist-to-turnover ratio with 13 assists and just seven turnovers.

Frederick-Childress is the second Titan freshman to earn the honor this season following Megan Galloway back on Dec. 2.

AERIAL ASSULT
A three-point threat might not be sufficient enough to describe Senee Shearer's game.

In her career, Shearer has attempted 970 shots and 625 of them have been from behind the arc. That means 64.4% of her career looks have been from downtown.

Her 227 three-point attempts on the season are third in the country behind Charleston Southern's Erin Bratcher (239) and Oregon's Katelyn Looper's (234).

Shearer also has 205 career 3-pointers, second in school history and just 12 away from school record-holder Michelle James (1998-02) who has 217.

She recently passed Coach Rademacher in that race as she had 201 in 568 attempts in 117 career games.

Coach Rademacher does have her beat in total points with 1,686 points – compared to 1,109 for Shearer - as she hit on more than 250 more field goals and she also dished out 439 career assists to Shearer's 138.

SHEARER NAMED TO 2014 NANCY LIEBERMAN AWARD WATCH LIST
Senior Senee Shearer was named to the 2014 Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The award recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. Candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman.

Shearer was joined by 28 other players on the initial watch list, which includes the likes of Odyssey Sims of Baylor, Bria Hartley of Connecticut, Duke's Chelsea Gray, Amber Orrange of Stanford and Tennessee's Ariel Massengale. She is also the only player from the Horizon League as well as from a school in Michigan on the list.

The list will be narrowed down to a final 20 in February, then final five by March. The Lieberman Award winner will be announced during Final Four weekend activities.

Previous winners of the Nancy Lieberman Award include last year's recipient Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Sue Bird (Connecticut), Renee Montgomery (Connecticut) and Diana Taurasi (Connecticut).

AMONG THE NATION'S LEADERS
Senior Senee Shearer is currently seventh in the nation with 3.23 three-point field goals per game. Shearer's 71 trifectas on the year are tied for eighth in the nation.

She is also 28th in the country averaging 20.3 ppg., and 38th with 447 total points.

KNOCK EM DOWN ROOK
Freshman Haleigh Ristovski turned in a great performance at Youngstown State as the rookie connected on five 3-pointers en route to a season-high 15 points.

Ristovski came into the game just 5-of-24 from three, but ended the contest 5-of-8, while adding five rebounds and a season-best two blocks playing all 40 minutes.

In her last time out against Milwaukee, she tied her season high with 15 points, while adding seven rebounds and versus Green Bay, Ristovski put together a great game with eight points, seven rebounds and tying her career best with five assists.

In her last six games, Ristovski has three double-digit scoring efforts (15 vs. Milwaukee, Green Bay and 11 vs. UIC) and is tallying 10.2 ppg., 4.8 rpg., 2.2 apg., and is shooting 42.6% (23-of-54) from the field.

SHEARER NETS 1,000
The UDM 1,000-point club added another member as Senee Shearer became the 19th player to reach the mark against UIC on Jan. 16.

Shearer now has 1,109 points and is just 34 points away from 16th place.

Below is a list of people ahead of her in scoring in Titan history.
14th - Jeanie Hill - 1,199 - 1994-97
15th - Mandy Chandler - 1,181 - 1987-91
16th - Lindsey Pasquinzo - 1,143 - 2002-06
17th - Senee Shearer - 1,109 - 2010-pre.

Shearer is currently second in the Horizon League - and 28th in the nation - in scoring at 20.3 points per game, trailing only Wright State's Kim Demmings' 21.6

She has already scored a career-high 447 points this season in 21 games, more than her previous career best of 367 she totaled in 33 games as a sophomore.

OK TAY
Since being held scoreless at Valparaiso on Jan. 23, sophomore Tayelor McCalister has been on a tear with four straight games in double figures, including tying and then setting a new career high.

Against Milwaukee last week, she had 12 points, a game-high six assists and four rebounds and that came after a career performance with 24 points, a career-best nine rebounds and four helpers against Green Bay.
She started her scoring barrage by tying her then career best with 17 at Milwaukee - while grabbing eight rebounds - and then came away with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists at Youngstown State.

During this streak, she is averaging 16.8 ppg., on 28-of-55 (50.9%) shooting and 11-of-15 from the free throw line (73.3%), while adding 26 rebounds (6.5) and 17 assists (4.2).

NEED TO WIN THE GLASS
The Titans won the battle of the boards against Milwaukee, 45-41, only the fifth time this year that UDM has outrebounded an opponent and the first since doing so against Chicago State on Dec. 6, a span of 11 games.

FEELING PINK
If you are coming to historic Calihan Hall this month to see the red, white and blue, than you will see a different color as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team will sport pink uniforms for its home games during the month of February.

The team also took part of the Play 4Kay initiative on Saturday, Feb. 8, in its home game against Milwaukee.

FRESHMEN STEPPING UP
Freshmen usually have their ups and downs, but in a season that has seen the Titans use five of their six freshmen, a few have contributed some big games recently.

Haleigh Ristovski nailed five 3-pointers en route to a season-best 15 points at Youngstown State and just matched her season high against Milwaukee.

Megan Galloway grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds at Youngstown State and had eight points and seven rebounds against Milwaukee, while Reyna Montgomery tied her season high for the third time this year with 11 markers at Milwaukee and against Oakland.

Meanwhile, Minisha Frederick-Childress was inserted into the starting line-up four games ago and is coming off two career performances with a season-high 11 points and six assists against the Penguins and 10 points with nine boards versus the Panthers.

COACH RAD LOOKING FOR A RECORD
Head coach Autumn Rademacher has recorded 87 victories and is currently in third place in UDM history in wins, just six away from the school record held by her coach in college Fred Procter (93, 1990-96) and four away from DeWayne Jones (91, 1983-90).

It is not like Coach Rademacher took over a top of the line program as Detroit was coming off back-to-back last-place finishes and just 11 total wins from 2006-08.

In her first five years, Detroit posted three winning seasons, a 20-win campaign, five-straight years with a conference tournament victory and a trip to the WNIT in 2012 - the first postseason action for UDM since 1997.

HAT'S OFF TO YOU
Senior Megan Hatter was back on the court for the Titans against Milwaukee after missing seven-straight games with a foot injury. She had six points, four rebounds and an assist in 19 minutes in the win over the Panthers.

She recorded a career-high 26 points and seven rebounds against Madonna on Dec. 30, and now has 11 games this season - and 32 in her career - with five or more rebounds and is currently second on the squad in rebounding at 6.3 rpg.

She posted her first career double-double against Ball State on Nov. 23, and then tallied her second vs. Chicago State on Dec. 7 with 21 points and tying her career mark with 11 rebounds. Hatter was also a career-best 8-of-13 from the field.

Back on Nov. 30, she recorded a then career-high 17 points and tied her career mark with five assists in a win over Georgia Southern. In that contest, she was 5-of-8 from the field with three 3-pointers and was also a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line with seven boards.

Against Ball State on Nov. 23, she posted her first double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and was actually scoreless with just two caroms in the first half of that game before erupting in the second period.

In her last eight games, Hatter is averaging 15.1 ppg., and a team-best 7.1 rpg., shooting 46.3% from the field (38-of-82), 39.5% (17-of-43) from three and 77.8% at the line (28-of-36).

GETTING BACK TO FORM
Tayelor McCalister had a fine start to her sophomore year with career highs in nearly every category in her first four games, before an injury forced her out of five straight.

Her offense has once again picked up in the last nine games with six double-digit performances and a career-high 24 points and nine rebounds against Green Bay.

Earlier in the year, she nearly had a triple-double against Eastern Michigan with eight points, eight rebounds and a career-high nine assists.

Against Michigan, McCalister was in double figures with 14 points (7-9 FG) to go with six rebounds and four assists.

On the year, she is averaging 10.7 points - fourth on the team - a team-high 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals as well as 4.3 rebounds per game.

ALL GAME FOR RISTOVSKI
Titan rookie Haleigh Ristovski is doing a good job of protecting the ball, something that a lot of rookies have trouble with.

She currently has a 36-11 assist-to-turnover ratio on the year and is also doing a good job hitting the glass at 4.1 rebounds per game, with a season-high 10 caroms at Wright State.

D-FENCE
Detroit forced 19 Milwaukee turnovers its last time out, the most UDM has seen an opponent turn it over since IPFW had 21, a span of nine games.

AMONG THE LEADERS
UDM is fourth in the Horizon League and 108th in the nation in scoring at 70.5 ppg.

The Titans are also fourth in rebounding at 39.6 per game.

GETTING TO 70
The Titans are 47-16 when they score 70 or more points- including 15-3 last year - as well as 16-4 when they score 80 or more under head coach Autumn Rademacher.

UDM has also eclipsed 90 seven times under Coach Rad, with a season-high 96 vs. Eastern Michigan on Dec. 15.

FOUR OUT
For the second time in three games and the eighth time this season, the Titans had four players in double figures against Milwaukee as senior Senee Shearer (21), freshman Haleigh Ristovski (15), sophomore Tayelor McCalister (12) and freshman Minisha Frederick-Childress (10) each came up with the offensive figure. That same quartet also accomplished the feat at Youngstown State.

MIX & MATCH
Due to the injuries Detroit has racked up, the Titans have used 15 different starting line-ups.

No Titan will start every game this season due to all the injuries and Detroit has seen 12 of its 13 players on the roster start at least one contest, with the lone exception in senior walk-on Abby McCollum who was just officially added to the roster in mid-December.
