Women's Basketball Notebook: Feb. 19, 2014

Every week, the Titan notebook will give a little more insight into the odds and ends stats, storylines and notes that might have been overlooked during the previous week's action.

This Girl Is On Fire – She was held scoreless at Valparaiso on Jan. 23 and since that time, Titan sophomore Tayelor McCalister has been an offensive force with six-straight games in double figures with a career-high 24 points – along with a career-best nine rebounds - against Horizon League-leader Green Bay. Some of her other big games have included 19 points, five rebounds and five assists at Oakland, and 17 points with eight boards and five helpers at Milwaukee.

In her last six games, McCalister is averaging 17.0 ppg., - second on the team – with 5.0 rpg., 4.0 apg., and shooting 47.7% (41-of-86).

Another Honor For A Freshman – An old coach lingo states that freshmen are not freshmen once the end of the regular season rolls around and the Titans have seen a number of them step up recently. In the last two weeks, both Minisha Frederick-Childress and Megan Galloway have earned the Horizon League Freshman Of The Week accolade.

Frederick-Childress has scored in double digits in three of the last six games and also had a season-high nine rebounds against Milwaukee and seven assists at Oakland. Galloway was in double figures in both games last week with her second double-double of the year recording a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds at Oakland and 13 points with seven boards in just 18 minutes at Cleveland State.

Haleigh Ristovski has even turned it on with three double-digit scoring efforts in her last five games with a career-best 19 against the Vikings last Saturday.

Almost There – Senior Senee Shearer nailed three triples at Cleveland State her last time out and with 211 total in her career, she now sits just six away from tying and seven away from breaking the Detroit record of 3-pointers made, held by Michelle James (1998-02).

Trying To Make It Three – Senior Senee Shearer is second in the Horizon League in scoring at 19.9 ppg., and if she can finish the season over 20.0, she would be just the third Titan to ever do that following Cassandra Pack's 22.2 ppg., in 1987 and Shareta Brown's 21.0 in 2013.

Offense Clicking Now – Since junior Ellisha Crosby went down with an injury late in December and senior Megan Hatter was hurt in early January, the Titans have been looking for that extra scorer to go with senior Senee Shearer and in the last five games, the balance has been there.

Detroit has seen four players score in double figures in three-straight games and four of the last five. Even in the game that UDM did not have four players with 10 or more, the Titans had two players record 20-point games in Shearer and sophomore Tayelor McCalister against Green Bay.

And The Injury Report – Senior Megan Hatter returned to the line-up on Feb. 8 against Milwaukee, but just like that, another injury hit UDM as freshman Reyna Montgomery has missed the last two games.

Last Call, Maybe? – The Titans will start a three-game homestand this weekend when Wright State visits the Motor City. UDM will then entertain Valparaiso next Wednesday (Feb. 26) and Youngstown State next Saturday (Mar. 1). The three games are the last home contests in the regular season.

Detroit is also in the running to possible host a conference tournament game depending on how the bracket shapes out and that would be on Monday, Mar. 10.
