OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (2/20/2014) -- Senior
Troy Dennis of the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team received a great honor today as he was one of 20 NCAA® lacrosse student-athletes who excel both on and off the field and were selected as candidates for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate men's lacrosse.
"Troy is the embodiment of what we want our program to be," said head coach Matt Holtz. "He is extremely hard working on and off the field and we are proud that he is a Titan."
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
Dennis is a four-year member of the Titan lacrosse team who helped Detroit capture its first-ever MAAC Championship and NCAA Championship appearance in 2013 as well as a runner-up MAAC Championship effort in 2011.
He is a two-year member of the MAAC Academic Honor Roll and the MAAC All-Academic Team and a three-time recipient of the University of Detroit Mercy Honor roll.
Dennis has been a UDM Presidential Ambassador since 2013 and has been on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) for three years. Just this past fall, he was featured on the cover of Inside Lacrosse Magazine for his dedication in strength and conditioning.
Some of his community involvement has been with Baldwin's (NY) Summer Program Camp as a supervisor in 2012 and 2013, a Detroit Arts Beats and Eats Festival Volunteer in 2013 and 2014, a Larry Bosciano Children Lacrosse Clinic Volunteer since 2006 and a Campus Kitchens Volunteer in 2011 and 2012.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 2014 candidate class includes five student-athletes who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and six were members of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-America team in 2013.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Baltimore May 24-26.
