Halftime Video Of Participants & Cheerleaders
DETROIT (2/23/2014) -- The laughter and smiles were evident all throughout historic Calihan Hall as the University of Detroit Mercy's Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day was held on Saturday, Feb. 22. The event preceded UDM's women's basketball game against Wright State.
National Girls & Women in Sports Day celebrated 28 years as an annual event, which brings attention to the success of Title IX and the thousands of opportunities it has provided young girls in the United States.
The event was open to all girls ages 6-13 as they were part of a number of exciting games and activities on the day that featured a variety of sports clinics. During each of the sports stations, Titan student-athletes were on hand from nearly all of Detroit's varsity teams and they helped provide skill instruction and hands-on demonstrations to all the participants.
This year's sports included basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, track and field and cheerleading.
The cheerleading portion was more of a real "practice" for the girls as the Titan cheerleaders went through a few drills that both groups would later perform during halftime of the women's basketball game. Once the buzzer sounded for the half, the girls and the Titan dancers and cheerleaders took the court to entertain the crowd and show off what they learned.
At Detroit, 10 of the Titans' 19 varsity programs are for females and all are scholarship sports.
The University of Detroit Mercy would like to thank all the girls and families who came out and would love to see you back at UDM for future events, including next year's National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
