LAST OUTING
Senior co-captain
Evan Bruinsma recorded his sixth double-double of the season but it wasn't enough as Wright State used a second half run to sneak past the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team, 65-61, Friday night on ESPNU at the Nutter Center.
Bruinsma finished with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds, while his co-captain teammate Juwan Howard, Jr. added 16 points and eight rebounds.
Detroit (13-16, 6-8 HL) led 37-35 with 15:18 left, before Wright State (16-13, 8-6 HL) put together a 12-2 run, led by eight-straight points from Matt Vest to build a 47-39 lead with 10:37 left. The Titans trimmed the lead to four, 59-55, with 2:09 left and had three defensive stops but couldn't capitalize on them as the Raiders made some key free throws down the stretch to secure fourth place in the Horizon League.
Both teams finished shooting 39 percent overall, but Wright State made 44 percent (8-18) from downtown, while the Titans only connected on 21 percent (3-14). Detroit dominated the glass 41-26 and recorded eight blocked shots, but turned the ball over 21 times which resulted in 19 Wright State points.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS
Kelsey Barlow scored 23 points as UIC claimed its first Horizon League win of the year in an 80-58 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Tuesday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
The Panthers (16-13, 6-9 Horizon) again could never get on track offensively, shooting just 31.6 percent from the field. Plus Milwaukee had trouble controlling the UIC attack, as the Flames shot 51.9 percent and efficiently added to their 12-point halftime lead.
Kyle Kelm had 12 points to lead three Panthers in double figures.
SERIES WITH MILWAUKEE
This will be the 42nd meeting between Detroit and Milwaukee, with the Panthers leading the all-time series 21-20. Detroit won the first meeting this year 73-54 at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee. Detroit swept the regular season series last year.
1 FOR 100
Detroit Titans head coach
Ray McCallum enters Thursday's game just one win shy of becoming the fourth head coach in Titans history to record 100 or more for #DetroitsCollegeTeam.
Titan legend Bob Calihan leads the way with 306 wins while, Perry Watson (261) and Lloyd Brazil (185) are second and third, respectively. Calihan coached at Detroit for 21 years, while Brazil ran the show for 16 seasons and Watson 15. McCallum is currently in his sixth campaign with Detroit.
FRESHMAN BACKCOURT
The Titans have started freshman guards
Matthew Grant and
Jarod Williams in the backcourt together over the last four games, making the pair the first freshmen guards to start for Detroit since
Ray McCallum and
Jason Calliste did in 2010. The only difference being that both Grant and Williams are true freshmen, while in 2010 Calliste was a redshirt freshman. The last time two true freshmen started in the Titan backcourt together dates back to the 1980-81 season when Audie Matthews and Mark Moore started 13 games together.
CLEANING THE GLASS
Entering Thursday's game the Titans lead the Horizon League in offensive rebounds with 12.6 per game and overall with 37.5 per game. Senior co-captain
Evan Bruinsma leads the team and ranks second in the League with 7.9 boards per game, while
Ugochukwu Njoku (6.1) and
Juwan Howard Jr. (5.4) rank eighth and 11th.
UP NEXT
Detroit will conclude its regular season at home when the Titans host Green Bay on Saturday (March 1) for "Senior Day" at historic Calihan Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will be televised live locally on WADL.
