LAST OUTING
Juwan Howard Jr. hit a three-pointer with 5.7 seconds left in regulation to lift the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team by Valparaiso 59-57 Friday night on ESPNU at the ARC. The win was the third-straight for Detroit over Valpo on its home court.

Valparaiso (14-11, 6-4 HL) took the lead 57-56 after Alec Peters rolled in a layup with 36 left in regulation. Detroit then burned some time and used its final two timeouts before Howard was left all alone on an inbounds pass and drained a three-pointer from dead center to put the Titans up for good. Valpo did get the last shot from half court as time expired but it was no good.

Howard finished with 19 points, while senior Evan Bruinsma tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Southfield natives Carlton Brundidge and Patrick Onwenu combined for 15 points, nine rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots off the bench.

Detroit shot 38 percent (19-of-50) overall, but made 50 percent (10-20) from downtown, while Valpo finished shooting 40 percent (19-of-47) overall, including 27 percent (5-18) from beyond the arc. The Titans won the battle on the boards 37-30 and forced 15 turnovers with six steals and six blocked shots, while dishing out 12 assists.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS
For the third straight game, sophomore Ryan Weber set a career scoring high, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped a 77-67 decision to Wright State on Wednesday afternoon at the Nutter Center.

Weber scored a game-high 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, including two 3-pointers, while senior Kendrick Perry posted 16 points with five assists and three steals. Sophomore Bobby Hain scored 12 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds for the Penguins.

Perry has moved into sixth place on the YSU all-time scoring list with 1,799 career points and needs just one more to become the sixth player in school history to score 1,800 points. He also needs just five more steals to break the Horizon League career steals record of 237. Perry is YSU's all-time steals leader with 233.

With the loss, the Penguins fall to 13-11 overall and 4-5 in the Horizon League while Wright State improves to 14-12 overall and 6-5 in the league.

SERIES WITH YOUNGSTOWN STATE
This will be the 36th meeting between Detroit and Youngstown State, with the Titans leading the all-time series 26-9. YSU won the first meeting this year 77-63 at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio. The win snapped a four-game losing skid against Detroit dating back to a 64-61 win on Dec. 1, 2011 at Calihan Hall.

FRESHMAN BACKCOURT
The Titans have started freshman guards Matthew Grant and Jarod Williams in the backcourt together over the last four games, making the pair the first freshman guards to start for Detroit since Ray McCallum and Jason Calliste did in 2010. The only difference being that both Grant and Williams are true freshmen, while in 2010 Calliste was a redshirt freshman. The last time two true freshmen started in the Titan backcourt together dates back to the 1980-81 season when Audie Matthews and Mark Moore started 13 games together.

CLEANING THE GLASS
Entering Sunday's game the Titans lead the Horizon League in offensive rebounds with 12.4 per game and ranks second overall with 37.4 per game. Senior co-captain Evan Bruinsma leads the team and ranks second in the League with 7.8 boards per game, while Ugochukwu Njoku (6.1) and Juwan Howard Jr. (5.4) rank eighth and 13th.

UP NEXT
Detroit will play its third-straight Friday night showcase on ESPNU when the Titans visit Oakland on Friday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the O'rena with Jim Barber making the call.
