TOLEDO, Ohio (2/9/2014) -- Four is a good number and for the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team, four is the number of consecutive wins the team has put together after a 5-2 win over Toledo Sunday afternoon.
Detroit (4-2) posted two doubles victories as the No. 1 Titan pairing of freshman
Viktoria Laskutova and sophomore
Nino Sujashvili and the No. 2 doubles combination of senior
Julia Fernandes and
Irina Slizovskaya both won their doubles matches by a 6-4 score.
The Titans added four singles wins over Toledo (2-3) en route to the 5-2 defeat.
Slizovskaya won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and sophomore Valery Kulikovskaya won in straight sets as well, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Laskutova needed a third set tiebreaker but still came out on top at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. Freshman
Anna Davydova remained undefeated at 4-0 in singles play in the 2014 dual-match season as she also needed the extra set but won 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 at No. 5 singles.
Toledo is a team that had just won three straight matches with the latest being a 4-3 home win over UIC on Feb. 8, the day before Toledo and Detroit played. The win for the Rockets was the first ever in program history over UIC, the 17 time Horizon League Women's Tennis Champions. UIC was chosen to defend its Horizon League title this year in the
2014 Preseason Coaches Poll.
The next match-up for Detroit will be on Feb. 22 in Akron, Ohio as the Titans will face Duquesne in a neutral-court match. The contest is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET.
