INDIANAPOLIS (3/10/2014) -- Detroit might be getting ready for a game tonight, but it was an award-winning afternoon for a few Titans as the Horizon League and College Sports Madness released their All-League Teams.
For UDM, senior
Senee Shearer was named Second Team All-Horizon League, while freshman
Megan Galloway was selected to the All-Freshman squad by a vote from the HL Coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members. In addition, Shearer was tabbed to the Second Team and sophomore
Tayelor McCalister was Fourth Team by College Sports Madness.
Shearer has been among the leaders in scoring since the very start of the season and is currently third in the conference – and 45th in the nation - at 19.5 points per game. She broke a school record earlier in the year with eight-straight 20-point games and has 16 on the season, third in the HL.
She leads the conference with 93 triples – 17 more than anyone else in the league and tied for the 12th most in the country – and is hitting 3.2 per game, 13th in Division I. Shearer has been in double figures in scoring in 27 of UDM's 29 games and is also averaging 2.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game.
The all-time Titan leader with 227 career 3-pointers and 14th in school history with 1,298 points, it is the first time in her career that she has been All-League by the HL and the second time she has earned the accolade from College Sports Madness following her fourth-team honor in 2012.
Galloway went from not making an appearance in Detroit's season opener to taking over the starting forward position and finishing as the top rebounding freshman in the Horizon League at 6.4 per game, 14th overall. She is also averaging 7.9 points – fourth on the team – while shooting a team-best 50.6% from the field and tying for first with 13 blocks.
She has scored in double figures eight times, including twice posting a season-high 21 points. She also grabbed 10 or more rebounds six times and collected five double-doubles.
McCalister has stepped up her offensive game and is third on the team and 17th in the Horizon League in scoring at 11.9 ppg. Her 3.4 assists per game tops the team and stands 11th in the conference, while she is also tied for the top spot on the Titans with 27 steals.
She has scored in double figures 16 times – including 10 straight at one point – with a pair of double-digit outings in 24 against Green Bay and 22 at UIC.
The Titans will get ready for the Horizon League Championship by hosting Valparaiso in the opening round game tonight at Calihan Hall. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
