Day 1 Results
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (3/1/2014) -- The 2014 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships kicked off Saturday at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) and the University of Detroit Mercy men's indoor track and field team earned a pair of second place finishes and top qualifying marks on the first day.
The UDM men totaled 21 points and sit in fifth place overall, just six points behind second place and three out of third after day one.
In the weight throw, senior
Eric Lewis was looking to three-peat as Horizon League indoor champion. Lewis had a throw of 18.00m in his first attempt that put him in second place. His last attempt ended up as his farthest as his throw of 18.44m was good enough for second place for Detroit. Lewis made it difficult for junior teammate
Colin Cashner who finished seventh in the event with a new personal-best of 16.72m and the No. 4 all-time UDM mark.
The men's distance medley relay team also came in second place with an overall time of 10:07.24 that was the fifth-best time in school history for the Titans. A UDM record split from
Ryan Hofsess in the 1200m at 3:02.0 set the tone for the race. Freshman
Khalil Parris followed with the 400m portion and sophomores
Joshua Carolin in the 800m and
Austin Wigent in the 1600m finished the race off for Detroit.
The Titans had two scorers in the 5000m race as sophomore
Derek Gielarowski placed fourth with a time of 15:11.42 and freshman
Ryan Leahy ran 15:12.63 to finish sixth. Leahy's mark was a new personal best and also set a UDM rookie record and earn the No. 11 Titan-best mark.
The multi-events featured freshman
Dylan Kruis in the heptathlon for Detroit. Kruis was second in the shot put with a throw of 10.66m and finished with a total 2176 points putting him in sixth place with the pole vault and 1000m race still to come on Sunday.
The men's team also had a group of individuals who qualified for the final races on Sunday.
Senior
Charles Anthony and freshman
Brandon Wilks will both be in the 60m finals. Anthony ran the 60m in 7.00 and Wilks finished with the top qualifying time at 6.94. The mark was a new personal record and the No. 5 mark in school history as he was just the fifth Titan to break seven seconds.
Wilks and Anthony will also both be in the 200m finals as Anthony ran a time of 21.98 and Wilks set a new indoor personal-best with the same time as Anthony at 21.98. Wilks joined Anthony as the seventh Titan to break 22 seconds as Wilks now holds the No. 7 all-time mark.
Freshman
Ilia Panev and senior
Steven Ivanics both qualified for the final of the 60 meter hurdles. Ivanics had a time of 8.59 and Panev had a mark of 8.19. Panev's mark is the No. 3 all-time Titan-best mark and .02 off the UDM record. Panev also was eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.67m.
In the 400m, Parris ran a PR of 48.73 to finish second in qualifying and record the No. 7 all-time Titan best run.
Lastly, Carolin will run in the 800m finals making the cut with a PR of 1:53.40 and the No. 6 Titan mark, just off a UDM indoor record. His time was the top qualifying mark in the field heading into Sunday's final.
The first day also saw freshman
Joe Harmon run the 400m with a new personal record of 50.62 and senior
Martin Nelkie run the 5000m with a time of 15:14.81.
Sunday's events will start at 9:00 a.m. ET with the men's heptathlon and the high jump.
