Senior Speeches
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (3/31/2014) -- Winning and losing get all the headlines in sports, but on Sunday, the Titans gathered for the true meaning of a team in working together and making memories as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball banquet was held at the Southfield Marriott.
Staff, friends and family and some of the Titans biggest supporters were on hand for the great event, which was emceed by HLN Detroit's Holly Hedemark.
After some mingling at the start, Hedemark began the program and then
Sr. Beth Finster S.S.J. took over for a blessing and prayer.
A great dinner followed and then head coach Autumn Rademacher went up to the podium sharing some stories on the year. Every member of the team and staff then went up to the mic to tell their favorite or funny moment on the year, with the tales ranging from stories on locker room antics to gameday spotlights. As each player went to the stage, they were also given their varsity award.
Team awards were next with freshman
Megan Galloway earning the Freshman of the Year Award, while sophomore
Tayelor McCalister won the Most Improved award. Senior
Megan Hatter was honored with the Coaches Award and senior
Senee Shearer was named the Team MVP.
Shearer set a Titan record for 3-pointers in a season (97) and in a career (231) as she led the Titans in scoring at 19.5 points per game, third in the Horizon League. She was selected Second Team All-Horizon League by the conference and also by College Sports Madness and during the year, she was named to the 2014 Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, which recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. She ended her career with 1,248 career points, 13th in school history.
Hatter ends a great run of families at Detroit as she followed her sister, who also played four seasons with the Titans. Always a leader on and off the court, Hatter played a gritty and tough forward position for all four years and was one of the best post shooters on the team. Her hard work was seen this season as she missed seven games with a stress fracture in her foot, but came back to play the last nine games of the year.
Galloway just kept on improving day after day as the season went on and would end up on the HL All-Freshman Team. She averaged 7.9 points – fourth on the squad - and 6.4 rebounds – second on the Titans - and also tied for the team lead with 14 blocks. Her 6.4 rebounds was 15th in the HL and was the most among all freshmen in the league and she also led Detroit and was sixth in the conference in field-goal percentage (.497). She went from not getting off the bench in the season opener to registering five double-doubles on the year, tied for the most on the team as well as tied for 10th in the Horizon League. She was also selected the Horizon League Freshman of the Week three times and was the Player of the Week once by College Sports Madness.
McCalister experienced a breakout season that saw her tabbed Fourth Team All-Horizon League by College Sports Madness. She led Detroit with 3.3 assists per game – 11th in the Horizon League – while ranking second on the team and 17th in the HL with 11.7 points per game. She also crashed the glass at 4.2 rebounds per game - third on the squad – and her 28 steals was second. She scored in double digits 16 times, including four in a row to start the year and a streak of 10 in a row during conference play, and twice tallied 20 or more in a game.
With the awards all done, everyone was treated to a highlight video featuring the best plays of the season by each player and a little sneak preview of next season's opponents was unveiled.
The Titan women's basketball team would like to thank all of those that came out to the banquet as well as all of the fans who follow the team day in and day out.
