Game Notes vs. UIC

DETROIT (3/5/2014) --
Winners of two in a row, the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team will hit the road to close out the regular season starting with a trip to Chicago to face the UIC Flames on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. (EST) at the UIC Pavilion.

Titan fans can follow every UDM game this season through the women's basketball GAMEDAY CENTRAL page located on the Titans Athletic Website that will keep fans one click away from all the action. This page will feature links for live stats (audio and video when applicable) as well as links for all the latest info while also making it easy to find the Titans on social media and to purchase photos and game tickets. The Game Day Central page also carries all the information on each opponent from who is leading the all-time series to who won the last game.

Detroit swept its pair of home games last week to move into a position of hosting a home playoff game, something the Titans have done in each of head coach Autumn Rademacher's five years at UDM. The Titans are currently eighth in the Horizon League, but could move up as high as seventh and get a bye in the opening round depending on the results of the final two games. Detroit does not necessarily need to win both games to move to seventh as a certain combination of Titan wins and Milwaukee and Valparaiso losses as well as who wins the HL regular season could all play a factor due to tiebreakers.

The Titans started the week by overcoming a 17-point first half deficit to down Valparaiso, 81-79, before the red, white and blue opened a 17-point first half lead over second place Youngstown State and never looked back in a 75-60 victory.

UDM's new three-point record holder Senee Shearer led the way as the senior was named the Horizon League Player of the Week after averaging 19.0 points per game. She now has 219 career 3-pointers and is third in the Horizon League in scoring at 19.7 ppg.

Freshman Megan Galloway – the College Sports Madness HL Player of the Week - was a mismatch inside tallying two more double-doubles and tying her season high with 21 points against Valpo and sophomore Tayelor McCalister ran her streak to nine-straight games in double figures with 15 against the Crusaders and 12 in the win over YSU.

After the game, Detroit will finish the regular season campaign at Green Bay, who is in first place by one game over Wright State at the moment.

DETROIT VS. UIC
Detroit still leads the all-time series, 23-21, but UIC has won the last two meetings and five of the last seven.
The Titans are 7-10 on the road in the series, but have dropped three straight at the UIC Pavilion.

ABOUT THE FLAMES
UIC has won two of the last three and three of the last five to come into the game at 20-8 overall and 9-6 in the Horizon League. The Flames can still finish as high as third in the HL and have already set a school record with 20 wins on the year.

Three players are in the top 12 in the conference in scoring, led by Rachel Story's 17.7 points per game, fifth overall. Ruvanna Campbell leads the league in rebounding at 12.0 per game and is seventh in scoring at 16.8 ppg., while Katie Hannemann is tallying 14.3 ppg., 12th in the HL.

The Flames are third in the league in scoring at 73.4 points, while ranking second in points allowed at 68.1. They also top the HL in rebounding (42.8) and are second in steals (9.3) and blocks (2.9).

A PAIR OF HORIZON LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Senior Senee Shearer and freshman Megan Galloway both earned Horizon League Player of the Week honors by two different organizations on Monday as Shearer was tabbed by the HL and Galloway was selected by College Sports Madness.

Shearer led UDM with 19.0 points tallying a game-high 23 against Valparaiso and adding 15 against Youngstown State. The 23 versus the Crusaders was her 17th 20-point outing of the season as she was 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-7 from behind the arc in the come-from-behind win. Against potential first-place candidate Youngstown State, Shearer had 15 points and four assists with a pair of 3-pointers that saw her set a new school record with 219 in her career.

Galloway's accolade by College Sports Madness marks the third-straight week that she won an award as the HL made her the Freshman of the Week the last two weeks. Galloway was again on a tear down low posting a pair of double-doubles and averaging 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds against Valpo and YSU.

She started the week by tying her career-high with 21 points on 7-of-8 shots from the field with 10 rebounds in the victory over the Crusaders and then netted 16 points and 15 boards in the triumph against the Penguins.

BALANCED OFFENSE
With the four players in double figures their last time out, the Titans have now had four or more players score in double figures in six-straight games and seven of the last eight.

In the last six games, UDM is averaging 78.3 points, while on the year, Detroit is fourth in the Horizon League in scoring at 71.9 ppg.

MAKING A PITCH FOR HL FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
For the third-straight week Titan rookie Megan Galloway received a major honor as she was tabbed the College Sports Madness Horizon League Player of the Week.

The award follows two straight weeks of Galloway earning the HL Freshman Of The Week by the conference office.

Galloway was dominant in the middle in UDM's two wins last week, collecting a pair of double-doubles, while averaging 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. She tied her career high with 21 points against Valparaiso and added 15 points and 15 boards against a YSU team that is in the running for first place in the conference.

Galloway - who has won the HL Freshman of the Week three times this season - won her third HL accolade on Feb. 24 after posting 16 points and a season and game-high 17 rebounds against Wright State.

She was 7-of-17 from the field and even handed out a season-best five assists, while the 17 boards was the most by a Titan since Yar Shayok - the second leading rebounder in Titan history - had 17 against the College of Charleston in the second round of the WBI last season.

Galloway has now scored in double digits in five-straight games and seven total during Horizon League play. Galloway has also pulled down at least five rebounds in 11 of UDM's 13 conference games, including double digits on six occasions.

In her last five games, she is averaging a team-high 17.4 points and 11.8 rebounds per game and shooting 52.9% from the field (36-of-68).

In HL action, she is tallying 10.1 ppg., and 8.0 rpg.,  on 50.8% shooting (60-of-118).

AND THE RECORD GOES TO.....
Senior Senee Shearer as she set the Titan record for most three pointers on Senior Day, hitting her first trey of the game against Youngstown State. Shearer now leads the Horizon League with 85 trifectas and 3.1 three-pointers per game and has 219 in her career.

Along her record breaking run, she passed head coach Autumn Rademacher as she had 201 in 568 attempts in 117 career games.

Coach Rademacher does have her beat in total points with 1,686 points – compared to 1,195 for Shearer - as she hit on more than 250 more field goals and she also dished out 439 career assists to Shearer's 154.

A three-point threat might not be sufficient enough to describe Shearer's game.

In her career, Shearer has attempted 1034 shots and 656 of them have been from behind the arc. That means 63.4% of her career looks have been from downtown.

Her 258 three-point attempts on the season is currently fourth in the country, while her 83 triples is tied for 14th.

A DEFENSIVE WIN
Detroit tallied 75 points in its win over Youngstown State, but the great job on defense was the key.

Detroit held Youngstown State to 28.8% shooting (19-of-66) and 4-of-26 (15.4%) from behind the arc, and outrebounded the Penguins, 47-37.

The 28.8% shooting was the lowest by an opponent since UDM held Milwaukee to 22.8% (13-of-57) last season at home on Senior Day.

SHEARER RISING
The UDM 1,000-point club added another member as Senee Shearer became the 19th player to reach the mark against UIC on Jan. 16.

Shearer now has 1,195 points and is just four points away from 14th place and 35 shy of 13th place.

Below is a list of people ahead of her in scoring in Titan history.
12th - Shari Hill - 1,255, 1997-01
13th - Yar Shayok - 1,230, 2008-13
14th - Jeanie Hill - 1,199, 1994-97
15th - Senee Shearer - 1,195, 2010-pre.

Shearer is currently second in the Horizon League - and 39th in the nation - in scoring at 19.7 points per game.

She has already scored a career-high 533 points this season in 27 games, more than the 367 she totaled in 33 games as a sophomore.

YOUTH SERVED
To say that Detroit is young this year is easily stated by the amount of minutes that the Titan freshmen have played compared to the rest of the Horizon League.

Coming into the game against Valparaiso, UDM true freshmen have played 2,282 of the 5,400 minutes on the court this season breaking down to 42.2%, the most in the Horizon League.

FRESHMEN STEPPING UP
Freshmen usually have their ups and downs, but in a season that has seen the Titans use five of their six freshmen, a few have contributed some big games recently.

Haleigh Ristovski nailed five 3-pointers en route to 15 points at Youngstown State and then matched that against Milwaukee before setting a new career high with 19 at Cleveland State.

Megan Galloway has had four double-doubles in her last five games - including three straight - tied her career high of 21 points twice and posted a career-best 17 rebounds and five assists against Wright State, while Reyna Montgomery tied her season high for the third time with 11 markers at Milwaukee and against Oakland.

Minisha Frederick-Childress was inserted into the starting line-up nine games ago and has had a few career performances with a season-high 14 points against the Raiders, 11 points and six assists against the Penguins, 10 points and a season-high nine boards versus the Panthers and 10 points with four caroms and a career-best seven assists at Oakland.

TAY'S OFFENSIVE OUTPUT
She was held scoreless at Valparaiso on Jan. 23 but since that time, Titan sophomore Tayelor McCalister has been an offensive force with nine-straight games in double figures posting a career-high 24 points – along with a career-best nine rebounds - against Horizon League leader Green Bay.

Below is a list of her last eight games:
17 pts., 8 rebs., 2 ast. at Milwaukee
14 pts., 5 rebs., 5 ast. at Youngstown State
24 pts., 9 rebs., 4 ast. vs. Green Bay
12 pts., 4 rebs., 5 ast. vs. Milwaukee
19 pts., 5 rebs., 5 ast. at Oakland
16 pts., 2 rebs., 2 ast at Cleveland State
13 pts., 4 rebs., 5 ast. vs. Wright State
15 pts., 5 rebs., 2 ast. vs. Valparaiso
12 pts., 7 rebs., 2 ast. vs. Youngstown State

In her last nine games, McCalister is averaging 15.8 ppg., - second on the team – with 5.4 rpg., and 3.5 apg., and shooting 43.2% (57-of-132) from the field and 28-of-35 (80.0%) at the free throw line.

HAT'S OFF TO YOU
Senior Megan Hatter recently came back from a leg injury that saw her miss seven games and the veteran finally looked like she was back to playing shape tallying double figures in scoring in two of her last three games, including finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds against Wright State for her third double-double of the season.

She came back to have 10 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win over Valparaiso and had nine points with eight boards against Youngstown State.

She now has 15 games this season - and 35 in her career - with five or more rebounds and is currently leading the squad in rebounding at 6.1 rpg.

She also has 10 games in double figures in scoring and is third on the team at 10.4 ppg.

Hatter posted her first career double-double against Ball State on Nov. 23, and then tallied her second vs. Chicago State on Dec. 7 with 21 points and tying her career mark with 11 rebounds. Hatter was also a career-best 8-of-13 from the field.

Back on Nov. 30, she recorded a then career-high 17 points and tied her career mark with five assists in a win over Georgia Southern. In that contest, she was 5-of-8 from the field with three 3-pointers and was also a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line with seven boards.

Against Ball State, she posted her first double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and was actually scoreless with just two caroms in the first half of that game before erupting in the second period.

AMONG THE NATION'S LEADERS
Senee Shearer is currently 12th in the nation with 3.15 three-point field goals per game.

She is also 39th in the country averaging 19.7 ppg., and 59th with 533 total points.

If she were to finish the season averaging 20 or more points, she would be just the third Titan to average 20 in a game in a season behind Cassandra Pack's 22.2 in 1986-87 and Shareta Brown's 21.0 last season.

FREDERICK-CHILDRESS HONORED
After nearly posting a double-double and helping the Titans win their first conference game, freshman Minisha Frederick-Childress was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week on Feb. 10.

Frederick-Childress tallied 10 points, a career-high nine rebounds and four assists as UDM upended Milwaukee, 80-68, for its first HL win of the season last Saturday.

Originally from Flint, Frederick-Childress was inserted into the starting line-up nine games ago and is averaging 8.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists in that span with a career highs of 14 points against Wright State, nine boards at Youngstown State and seven assists at Oakland.

A GALLOWAY-IN EFFORT
Freshman Megan Galloway has rebounded nicely from an ankle injury earlier in the year.

Galloway has now been named the HL Freshman Of The Week three times this season and the College Sports Madness HL Player of the Week once.

She has collected five double-doubles, eight double figure scoring games and six contests with 10 or more rebounds.

She is currently leading all Horizon League freshmen in rebounding at 6.5 per game - 13th overall in the conference - and is now fourth on the Titans in scoring at 8.1 ppg.

Her double-doubles have come with 16 points and 15 boards against Youngstown State, tying her career high with 21 points and 10 rebounds against Valparaiso, 16 points and a career-best 17 rebounds against Wright State, 21 points with 10 boards at Oakland and 13 points with 10 rebounds at home versus Cleveland State.

At the FAU Thanksgiving Classic, she tallied 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, while shooting 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the field in netting 16 points with seven rebounds against Georgia Southern and seven points and six rebounds with two assists versus Rhode Island, earning her first HL Freshman of the Week accolade.

ALL GAME FOR RISTOVSKI
Freshman Haleigh Ristovski is showing her all-around talent as she gets more comfortable in the collegiate game. With her 11 markers against Wright State, she now has scored in double figures in four of her last eight games and five of her last 11.

She is coming off a game that showed what she can do on the court netting six points with six rebounds and three assists in the win over Youngstown State.

She had a career game with a season and game-high 19 points at Cleveland State, where she was 8-of-10 from the field with eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.

At Youngstown State, the rookie connected on five 3-pointers en route to 15 points. Ristovski came into the game just 5-of-24 from three, but ended the contest 5-of-8, while adding five rebounds and two blocks.

Against Milwaukee, she tallied 15 points, while adding seven rebounds.

In her last 10 games, Ristovski is averaging 9.4 ppg., and 4.8 rpg., and is shooting 48.0% (36-of-75) from the field and 16-of-41 (39.0%) from behind the arc.

PROTECTING THE BALL
Titan rookie Haleigh Ristovski is doing a good job of protecting the ball, something that a lot of rookies have trouble with.

She currently has nearly a 3-1 (42-14) assist-to-turnover ratio on the year and is also hitting the glass at 4.2 rebounds per game, with a season-high 10 caroms at Wright State.

A REIGN OF OFFENSE
Freshman Reyna Montgomery just came back from an injury that saw her miss four-straight games to score seven points and tally two rebounds, two assists and two steals against Youngstown State.

She was just starting to find a zone offensively tallying two double-digit performances in her last seven games.

She had 11 points, while adding five rebounds, two steals and an assist at Milwaukee and that was after posting 11 points and tying her season high with eight rebounds against UIC.

In her last six games that she has played, Montgomery is averaging 7.0 points and 3.5 rebounds with nine steals.

ON THE DL
Sophomore Rosanna Reynolds will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury early in the game at Western Michigan.

Reynolds was selected to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team last year after starting all 34 games and averaging a team-high 35.3 minutes per game, tallying 7.8 points – fifth on the team – along with 3.3 rebounds, and a team-high 4.0 assists per game (135).

Junior Ellisha Crosby has missed 15-straight games with a leg injury and is still day-to-day, while freshman Reyna Montgomery just returned after missing four straight as well as an earlier game against UIC.

Other Titans that have missed games this season include five game apiece from sophomore Tayelor McCalister and freshman Minisha Frederick-Childress.

Freshman Megan Galloway missed the Eastern Michigan game and senior Megan Hatter just returned after missing seven-straight contests.

All told, the injured Titans have missed a total of 62 games on the season.

D-FENCE
Detroit forced 19 Milwaukee turnovers on Feb. 8, the most UDM has seen an opponent turn it over since IPFW had 21, a span of nine games.

MIX & MATCH
Due to the injuries Detroit has racked up, the Titans have used 18 different starting line-ups.

No Titan will start every game this season due to all the injuries and Detroit has seen 12 of its 13 players on the roster start at least one contest, with the lone exception in senior walk-on Abby McCollum who was just officially added to the roster in mid-December.

GETTING BACK TO FORM
Tayelor McCalister had a fine start to her sophomore year with career highs in nearly every category in her first four games, before an injury forced her out of five straight.

Her offense has once again picked up in the last 13 games with 10 double-digit performances and a career-high 24 points and nine rebounds against Green Bay.

Earlier in the year, she nearly had a triple-double against EMU with eight points, eight rebounds and a career-high nine assists.

Against Michigan, McCalister was in double figures with 14 points (7-9 FG) to go with six rebounds and four assists.

On the year, she is averaging 11.7 points - third on the team - a team-high 3.3 assists and 1.0 steals as well as 4.4 rebounds per game.

HL HIGH'S
UDM is fourth in the Horizon League and 93rd in the nation in scoring at 71.9 ppg.

The Titans are also fourth in rebounding at 39.8 per game.

MEGAN'S 26
No not her age, but her new career high as senior Megan Hatter put in 26 points against Madonna on Dec. 30, her second 20-point game of the season and career.

She tied her career best with eight field goals and eight free throws in the contest.

GETTING SHOTS UP
UDM has attempted 1,741 shots on the year - 64.4 per game - with at least 61 shots in 19 of the 27 games on the season - and a season high of 85 against Eastern Michigan.

The 85 shots put up against EMU were the most since UDM took 86 at Cleveland State on Feb. 9, 2002.

Detroit has also netted 30 or more field goals six times this season with a season-high 37 also against the Eagles and the most since going 37-of-63 vs. Madonna on Dec. 22, 2012.

GETTING TO 70
The Titans are 49-19 when they score 70 or more points- including 15-3 last year - as well as 17-5 when they score 80 or more under head coach Autumn Rademacher.

UDM has also eclipsed 90 seven times under Coach Rad, with a season-high 96 vs. Eastern Michigan on Dec. 15.

COACH RAD LOOKING  FOR A RECORD
Head coach Autumn Rademacher has recorded 89 victories and is currently in third place in UDM history in wins, just four away from the school record held by her coach in college Fred Procter (93, 1990-96) and two away from DeWayne Jones (91, 1983-90).

It is not like Coach Rademacher took over a top of the line program as Detroit was coming off back-to-back last-place finishes and just 11 total wins from 2006-08.

In her first five years, Detroit posted three winning seasons, a 20-win campaign, five-straight years with a conference tournament victory and a trip to the WNIT in 2012 - the first postseason action for UDM since 1997.
