Horizon League Release INDIANAPOLIS (4/10/2014) -- The Horizon League announced its' Winter Academic All-League Teams on Thursday and 11 Titans earned the honor as Detroit had the second highest amount of student-athletes in the Horizon League.
Evan Bruinsma and
Ugochukwu Njoku from men's basketball,
Joshua Carolin,
Ryan Hofsess,
Steven Ivanics,
Austin Wigent and
Colton Wirgau from men's indoor track and field and
Louisa Coppola,
Alani Letang,
Shannon Marchant, and
Sara Taylor from indoor women's track and field were the UDM honorees.
It's the second award for Taylor after earning the winter honor a year ago and Coppola, Hofsess and Wigent were all on the 2013 Fall Academic All-League Team from their performances in cross country.
Bruinsma was a team captain for men's basketball and averaged 12.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He was also named the Horizon League Scholar Athlete of the Month for both November and December and carries a 3.80 GPA in Business Administration. Njoku played in all 32 games for the Titans this year leading the team with 47 blocked shots, while possessing a 3.80 GPA in Software Engineering
Carolin (3.67, Software Engineering) finished fourth at the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships and along with Hofsess (3.44, Biology) and Wigent (3.80,Business), the trio were all part of the men's distance medley relay team that placed second. Wigent was also seventh in the 3000 meters and Wirgau (3.54, Electrical and Computer Engineering) was part of the second place 4x400 meter relay team. Ivanics (3.21, Electrical Engineering) was seventh in the 60-meter hurdles.
Coppola (3.84, English Literature) captured the Horizon League Most Outstanding Performer for Women's Track and Field at the HL Indoor Track and Field Championships as she helped the Titans finish second overall as a team. Coppola also won the women's mile and nearly also won the 3000 meter race taking runner-up. Taylor (3.82, Biochemistry), Letang (3.66, Communications), Marchant (3.90, Intelligence Analysis (Masters), and Coppola were all part of the women's distance relay team that finished first, while Marchant and Letang were both part of the 4x400 meter relay foursome that had a first-place finish for Detroit. Marchant was also second individually in the 400 meters.
76 Horizon League student-athletes were recognized as balloting was conducted by the League's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors as the League continues to recognize student-athletes for their success both in competition and in the classroom.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
