INDIANAPOLIS (6/18/2014) -- They did the work outside as well as inside the classroom and on Wednesday afternoon, 11 University of Detroit Mercy student athletes were honored for their outstanding academic and athletic achievements as the Horizon League announced its' 2014 Spring All-Academic Teams.

The 11 selections were the third most in the league trailing only Youngstown State's 20 and Valparaiso's 15.

The Titans' list included senior
Hannah Klenk from the softball team and sophomore
Valeryia Kulikovskaya from women's tennis, while the women's golf squad added a pair in seniors
Lindsey Lammers and
Christina Thorne. The men's outdoor track and field team had three tabbed in seniors
Steven Ivanics and
Martin Nelkie and sophomore
Colton Wirgau, while the women saw four garner the accolade in seniors
Louisa Coppola and
Shannon Marchant, junior
Jasmine Greene and sophomore
Alani Letang.

Klenk (3.92, Nursing) was a four-year varsity letter winner and the starting center fielder for the Titans in 2014, ending the year fourth on the team in stolen bases. Kulikovskaya (3.84, Pre-Law) led Detroit with 12 wins in the duel season and was 7-1 in HL play, and Lammers (3.87, Business Administration) and Thorne (3.57, Psychology) were both All-Horizon League and All-Tournament in leading UDM to its' second-straight Horizon League title.

Ivanics (3.22, Electrical Engineering) and Wirgau (3.61, Electrical and Computer Engineering) both scored at the Horizon League Outdoor Championship and were on the HL Winter All-Academic Team, while Nelkie (3.31, Electrical Engineering) claimed second in the 10000-meters and fifth in the 5000m at the outdoor conference showdown.

Coppola (3.86, English Literature) was also a member of the Winter All-Academic Team for indoor track and won the outdoor 1500m title and finished runner-up in the 5000m. Marchant – who already graduated with a degree in Psychology and a 3.78 GPA and is currently pursuing her masters in Intelligence Analysis – was on the first-place 4x400-meter relay and placed second in the 800m at the outdoor league meet.

Greene (3.37, Psychology) was also on that winning 4x400 relay and was second in the 400m, while Letang (3.70, Communications) was another member of the victorious relay foursome and finished second in the 400m and fifth in the 200m at the outdoor conference championship.

A total of 89 student-athletes from eight spring sports were honored in balloting by the League's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
