Titans Add Experience & Skill To The Sidelines With Albro, Cleverly

DETROIT (6/25/2014) -- Veteran basketball coach Rick Albro and noted video and scouting guru Tyler Cleverly are taking their expertise to the Motor City as both have been named assistant women's basketball coaches for the University of Detroit Mercy. Both will begin their assignments immediately for UDM.

"Rick has a sensational coaching background and I could not be more excited to add him to our coaching staff," said head coach Autumn Rademacher. "Tyler comes from an outstanding Florida State program where head coach Sue Semrau does a phenomenal job of preparing her staff members to become full-time assistant coaches."

Coach Albro has over 40 years of coaching experience, which includes over 450 career wins, in his time as a high school and collegiate coach. He has spent the last four years as an athletic director at Northview High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with the last three on the sidelines for the girls basketball program.

"This is a great opportunity Coach Rademacher has made available to me," said Coach Albro. "I'm excited about the challenge here at Detroit. Coach Rademacher has put me in charge of the defense and we have some work to do and I love challenges. Looking at their stats from last year and watching some film, we have to establish a defensive foundation to build on and that's going to be a work in progress, but I'm excited about that challenge."

Prior to that, Coach Albro was an assistant women's basketball coach at Michigan State for three years (2007-10), helping the Spartans to three-straight 20-win campaigns, a WNIT runner-up effort and two NCAA Tournament appearances with a Sweet 16 run in 2009. He was the academic liaison at MSU and assisted with opponent scouting and game planning. He also worked with post players and tutored the development of All-American Allyssa DeHaan.

His other collegiate coaching stops came as an assistant men's basketball coach at Cleveland State from 2003-06 and as the head men's coach at Aquinas College from 1990-2003. The winningest coach in Aquinas history, he was named the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Coach of the Year after setting a school record with a 23-10 mark in 1999-2000, and he twice earned NAIA District Coach of the Year honors.

Coach Albro has also been a head coach at a number of high schools including the boy's team at Grandville (2006-07) and East Grand Rapids (1978-90), where he also led the girl's squad for three seasons (1983, 1987-88). At East Grand Rapids, Coach Albro's boy's program won four conference, six district and three regional titles, and made a trip to the state tournament semifinals.

"He is a seasoned veteran who has coached successfully at many different levels," said Coach Rademacher. "His experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm for the game are his biggest assets and I am truly looking forward to working with him on a daily basis. We are thrilled to welcome Rick and his wife Cathy to the Detroit Titan women's basketball family."

Coach Cleverly comes to Detroit from Florida State, where he spent the last seven years as the Seminoles' video coordinator. His expertise in video and scouting dates all the way back to his time with the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Fever.

At FSU, Coach Cleverly was responsible for the entire film breakdown for Florida State and its' opponents. He oversaw a multi-million dollar video room and through his work with XOS video editing software, coaches and players were able to review games and practices almost immediately after their conclusion. He also assisted in all of the Seminoles' team camps.

"I am extremely excited to join Coach Rademacher and the Titan family and I will do whatever it takes so that the program can capture a Horizon League Championship," said Coach Cleverly. "I am excited to be back in the Midwest where I am originally from and can't wait to get on the court and get ready for this season. I am also excited to get out in the community with our players and show them that we have something very special here at UDM."

With Florida State, Coach Cleverly aided a program that posted five 20-win seasons in his seven years and made six trips to the NCAA Tournament, with FSU advancing all the way to the Elite Eight in 2010. During his time in Tallahassee, he helped mentor five student athletes who went on to play in the WNBA, including the sixth overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft Jacinta Monroe and the fifth overall pick in 2014 Natasha Howard.

"As the video coordinator at FSU for seven years, he was exposed to all aspects of the game and will do a tremendous job for us in many areas, including scouting, recruiting, video, summer camps, and on-court coaching," added Coach Rademacher.

Before Florida State, Coach Cleverly worked as a video intern for both the Pacers and Fever. With both teams, he provided breakdowns of games for coaches, players and scouts as well as opponent video for the use in scouting reports. In addition, he compiled statistical information and wrote personnel reports on opponents.

"We are very excited to add Tyler, his wife Courtney, and his two sons Dawson and Cooper to the Detroit Titan women's basketball family," said Coach Rademacher. "His valuable experience will be a great asset to our program."

The Titans return 10 players from last year's team and should also have the services of redshirt sophomore Rosanna Reynolds and senior Ellisha Crosby, two starters who missed most of 2013-14 due to injuries.
