Basketball Sees Attendance Increase During 2013-14 Season

DETROIT (6/4/14) – University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's basketball home games saw an attendance rise during the past 2013-14 season as the men's increased by 10 percent and the women's by 65 percent.

On the men's side, the Titans had a total 37,082 fans in attendance during the 15 home games played at historic Calihan Hall last year, which topped the 2012-13 total by nearly 3,500 fans. Altogether Detroit averaged 2,472 fans per game during the 2013-14 season, compared to an average of 2,234 per game in 2012-13.

Last year's attendance numbers were even higher than the 2011-12 season which saw the Titans finish 22-14 overall with a trip to the NCAA Tournament. That year Detroit averaged 2,272 fans per game, which was about a 10 percent drop from the 2010-11 season, which averaged 2,474 per game.

The largest attendance number during head coach Ray McCallum's era came during the 2009-10 season when the team finished 20-14 overall and averaged 2,536 fans per game.

For the women, Detroit drew a total of 9,748 fans during this past year, up from 5,919 in 2012-13. The biggest gate for the Titans was the 2,156 screaming fans that came out to see the red, white and blue take on Michigan on Nov. 16, 2013 – the largest since 3,218 was recorded on Jan. 24, 2004, as UDM upended Green Bay, 56-50, in overtime. Detroit also had 1,311 fans in the first-ever Horizon League meeting between the Titans and Oakland on Jan. 11, 2014.
