DETROIT (7/1/14) – The Titan Club – a booster organization for the University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Department - hosted its 4th Annual Titan Club Basketball Camp for Special Needs players on Monday (June 30) at Calihan Hall. Forty-five participants were joined by their families, friends, and many Titan Club volunteers as they enjoyed a fun day of developing basketball skills.
"We've played the clap game for four years now and have never had one of our players win," stated men's basketball assistant coach
Jay Smith, who gets everyone involved in competing in the "Clap Game" that tests hand-eye coordination.
Former Titan men's basketball player Bernie Fuhs served as camp director for the fourth year, leading a team of top coaches including fellow Titan alums.
The UDM women's basketball team along with assistant coach
Ke'Sha Blanton also assisted with instruction throughout the day. After stretching out with Assistant Athletic Trainer
Sean Clark, campers performed a series of drills and skillsets under the watchful eyes of the coaches, and also competed in a free throw shooting contest. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly hearing from men's basketball head coach
Ray McCallum about hard work, and always having fun with the game of basketball. Smith then capped it off with the clap game that brought a smile to everyone face.
Here is what a few parents had to say about Monday's Annual Titan Club Basketball Camp for Special Needs players.
