Western Michigan Recap
The Titans started the 2014 season in thrilling fashion, earning a 2-1 victory at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Sophomore midfielder Adam Clauss scored on a penalty kick just 27 seconds into overtime to give Detroit the win. Sophomore midfielder Matt DeVries also scored his first collegiate goal during the contest off a free kick by senior Matt Ybarra.

DeVries' goal temporarily gave Detroit the lead, until WMU scored with three minutes left in the game. The victory was the first since 2011 in the season opener for the Titans.

Dayton Flyer Classic
Detroit plays in the opener of the Dayton Flyer Classic at 5 p.m. on Friday. Live statistics will be available for Friday's contest. The Titans play in the second game on Sunday at 2 p.m. Live statistics and video streaming are set to be available for Sunday's final match. All of the links to follow along are available at the link at the top of the page. All games during the classic are being played at historic Baujan Field, which was originally built for football in 1925 and is home for both the men's and women's soccer teams.

Scouting Northern Kentucky
The Norse (0-0-1) tied Cincinnati 1-1 in their season opener on Aug. 29. Northern Kentucky also tied in its two preseason exhibition games, playing Kentucky and Belmont to scoreless games.  Junior midfielder Ronnie Moss came off the bench to score the lone goal in the opener for NKU. Junior goalkeeper A.J. Fleak made five saves in net for the Norse in the opener.

Northern Kentucky enters its 12th season under head coach John Basalyga. He led the squad to a Division II national championship in 2010. The Norse joined Division I in 2012 and last season went 9-4-6 for its first winning season at the Division I level.

Among the top returners for the Norse are senior forward Caleb Eastham (four goals), junior midfielder Yaw Addai (three goals, two assists in 2013) and Fleak, who started all 19 games last season and had a 0.94 goals against average with four shutouts.

Scouting Dayton
The Flyers (0-1) dropped their season-opener on Aug. 30 in a 2-0 defeat at Loyola-Chicago. Dayton allowed two goals in the first 23 minutes of the contest. Dayton also lost both of its preseason exhibition matches, falling 2-1 in each game at Butler and West Virginia.

Dayton, in its 10th season under head coach Dennis Currier, is coming off a 14-2-3 record in 2013. The Flyers had a perfect 10-0 record in their non-conference games last season and was the last team in Division I to lose a game as the team started the season 10-0-2.

The 2014 Dayton team has 18 players on its roster in its first or second season on the squad. Top returning players for Dayton are senior forward Greg Enstone (10 goals in 2013), senior midfielder Amass Amankona (five goals, five assists last season) and junior goalkeeper Chris Froschauer (19 starts, nine shutouts and 0.75 GAA in 2013).

All-Time Series
The Titans and Northern Kentucky are playing against each other for the first time. Detroit has met Dayton seven previous times and trails the Flyers in the all-time series 1-5-1. The two squads met in 2013, with Dayton taking a 1-0 win in a game played at Missouri State in Springfield, Mo. Detroit goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher made six saves in that game.

Road Grind
Detroit begins the 2014 season with seven games on the road. Following this weekend's pair of games in Dayton, UDM has four more road contests before its first home match of the season. Detroit travels to Las Vegas for games against Cal State Fullerton and UNLV on Sept. 12 and Sept. 14, respectively. The Titans then head to New York for road games against Buffalo on Sept. 19 and Niagara on Sept. 21. The Titans first home game of the season is also its conference opener on Sept. 27, when Detroit hosts Wright State.

Titans Selected to Finish in Tie for Seventh in Conference
The Titans were picked to finish in a tie for seventh place in the Horizon League Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released prior to the season on Aug. 20. Detroit earned 16 votes in the poll, finishing in a tie for seventh with Belmont. Milwaukee received six first-place votes and is the favorite to win the league. UIC also earned three first-place votes and ranked second behind Milwaukee in the poll.
