ANN ARBOR, Mich. (1/17/2015) -- Freshman
Ben Kendell won the Kris Eggle Memorial 3,000 meter run Saturday to highlight action as the University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team competed at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational at the University of Michigan. The invitational was non-team scoring and also fielded teams from Michigan, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan and Siena Heights.
In his collegiate debut in the event, Kendell won the 3,000 meters over 17 other racers with a time of 8:29.78. The time is the second best time in school history in the event. He also broke the rookie record set by teammate
Ryan Leahy in 2014. It marks the second-straight season that a Titan has won the event after junior
Austin Wigent won the 3,000 meter run in 2014.
Junior
Joshua Carolin was Detroit's top finisher in the 600 meter run. He set a PR in the event with a time of 1:23.12 and finished in eighth place. Classmate
Colton Wirgau also ran in the 600 meters, finishing in a time of 1:26.89.
Sophomore
Ryan Leahy established a new PR in the mile run, crossing the line in 4:22.79. He placed 10th in the event. Four other Titans raced in the mile, as Wigent finished in 4:34.42, senior
Ylli Alla crossed in 4:43.12, senior
George Holman recorded a time of 4:44.51 and freshman
Miles Kelleher rounded out the group with a time of 4:49.83.
Senior thrower
Colin Cashner placed fourth out of 19 competitors in the weight throw with a top throw of 17.65 meters (57'11"). Junior
Jake Millyard also competed in the weight throw and had a season-best throw of 14.30 meters (46'11").
The Titans had a pair of participants in the 400 meter finals. Freshman
Zach Arnold placed fifth with a time of 52.97, while sophomore
Joe Harmon followed in sixth place with a time of 53.05.
Kendell wasn't the lone Titan in the 3,000 meters, as freshman
Charlie Felton finished with a time of 9:11.27 in his indoor 3,000 meters debut.
Sophomore
Ilia Panev raced in the 60 meter hurdles for the Titans and finished with a best time on the day of 8.40. Sophomore
Jacob Whitting also ran in the event, finishing with a time of 9.01.
In the long jump, sophomore
Zach Sand had a jump of 5.63m (18'5.75").
Detroit was sixth in the 4x400 meter relay. The Titans finished with a time of 3:31.79.
The Titans return to the track and field Friday, Jan. 23, competing at IPFW in a quadrangular meet at 3 p.m.
